Yes, I'd say that declaration simply detracted from her other "poor me" arguments. When I read her lawyer's argument I was mildly swayed in her favor - except for that ridiculous claim. I was left with the image of a talented artist who was naive and buffeted by the cruel and vicious music industry. But then the government rep effectively dismantled that image and I was left with no sympathy for this woman. I would have given her more time in jail.

Gary, I am in total agreement. In this case the system worked well and pre-emptive actions based on schoolyard gossip would be real slippery slope.

Ridiculous statement. You clearly know very little about Hitler or civics. People elect the mayor to run the city and you vote yes or no at the ballot box. Next time you vote, if you don't like what he does, don't vote for him. Simple! I think he is the very best mayor the city could have had.

I am from upstate NY, but city or upstate- I would prefer to live in this deep blue state than in many other states in the country. I'm glad if people leave our state, more for the rest of us to enjoy. Never chose to drink a super sized sugar drink in my life and could care less how they package my few as long as it is sanitary

ReplyThis is the most ridiculous piece of sleazy voyeurism I have read for a while. I understand that the family of a fugitive is "fair game" but this tacky article conjures up images of a "journalist" not only stalking the woman but going through surveillance footage from a restaurant...for what? To see someone they THINK might be the fugitive's mother (note the headline) eating with a friend. The only thing more squalid I've read are some of the comments that try to portray this woman as a monster.....yes believe it or not someone likened her to Frankenstein.
For my part, my heart goes out to her today. -

I am chagrined that no one has responded to Richard D's comment above: At 7:34 he wrote:
"The psychological pressure you put on yourselves in trying to be so chic and successful in a big city will only destroy you. Get back home and find a great guy and get married and have kids."
I was tempted to flag it as inappropriate but decided to leave it there for his embarrassment! It has to be the most chauvinistic, sexually biased comment I have read in a very long time.

This is tragic. But I'm not so sure one should jump to the conclusion that bullying pushed this young woman to do this. Bullying is a hot button issue and just like heavy metal lyrics a few years back, is now invoked every time some young person commits suicide. I am old enough to recall that when a teenager in my home town committed suicide it was attributed to her idolization of Elvis Presley. This young woman had attempted suicide in the past. She was in a dog eat dog type of industry but which industry isn't today. I make this point because while my empathy goes to her family, it also considers those friends named in her diary. How must they feel this morning with the whole world pointing fingers at them, with nothing to warrant that but the claim of a clearly mentally disturbed young woman.

I loved your post!
I only clicked on this because of the oxymoronici "Catholic Church", "Change" and "Tradition" in the headline.
Like you I was steeped in Catholicism from birth through high school education. Unlike you I was female so wasn't worthy of being an altar boy, but I did almost become a nun.
Fast forward through University, professional career, religious/spiritual odyssey and I arrived at very content agnosticism. My ventures to church were confined to weddings, funerals and cultural curiosity in foreign places. I was horrified to encounter the transition to everyone sipping from a common cup. I noted in shck that his continued throughout the aids hysteria of the 80's, SARS, HINI and numerous world wide flu epidemics. I can't say it better than you: watching "so many lemmings.....partake in such a ritual makes my head spin in circles!"

Unbelievable and a real indictment of the hypocrisy that defines the GOP.
