Interim Superintendent James O'Neill addressed misinformation in the district's hiring process of teachers at Monday night's West Orange's Board of Education meeting, the Alternative Press reported. According to the report, O'Neill explained the procedures for background checks during a teacher's hiring process. Principals review Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying every year and provide at least one sexual harassment workshop every five years. He also said school principals advise staff to not be alone with students. A West Orange fifth-grade teacher has been suspended indefinitely after he was arrested last week on charges he sexually assaulted a student. "Our highest priority is student safety," Interim Superintendent Jim O'Neill said in a statement. "We will closely monitor the case and the charges." The Washington School teacher, Christopher Yonitch, 36, of Livingston, was arrested Feb. 7 on charges of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to officials at the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. According to officials, the child is a 10-year-old student of Yonitch. A certified teacher will take on Yonitch's class for the remainder of the school year, O'Neill said. I just found out about this...it is just a sad sad story....you can never foresee what goes on in the mind of a person...no one can predict the actions of anyone..but I hope this is not something he would have done in the midst of his mind being clouded with bad judgement......one mistake can be life changing,,,,as teachers we must be careful of caring,,,never be alone with a student always be on…   more ›
