Former Superintendent Hired in Paterson

Anthony Cavanna, who resigned after the board placed him on administrative leave was hired in Paterson, according to Paterson Press.

Former superintendent, Anthony Cavanna has been hired in Paterson, earning a six-figure salary, after leaving the West Orange school district under unusual circumstances, according to a report on PatersonPress.com. Paterson Public Schools hired Cavanna as one of four executive directors for principal evaluation and coaching at $156,363 a year. Cavanna was placed on paid administrative leave pending further investigation into “district issues,” in July 2012. The following October, he resigned from his $228,316 position as superintendent. The new position is part of a plan created by state-appointed superintendent Donnie Evans to try to improve city schools.

Jake I want to make sure you see my point: Why didn't the Board renew Jerry Tarnoff's contract ? Because he didn't want it renewed. He wanted to retire. His pension is $144.000. According to you, his actions are somewhat illogical. I mean, why would he take a pay cut of 80k? In my opinion, Cavanna's contract wasn't renewed because he didn't want it renewed. just like Tarnoff, Cavanna didn't want …   more ›

West Orange Announces Change in School Calendar

District will be open Valentine's Day to make up for days lost in Sandy.

The West Orange Board of Education recently voted to add days to the school calendar to make up for closures resulting from Hurricane Sandy. District officials said Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013 will now be a full day, and Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 will be a single session or half day, the district announced. The super storm closed West Orange schools for one week at the end of October and beginning of November, leaving it one day short of the state-mandated 180 days of school for students. The full revised calendar is attached as a PDF to this article.

Half days are not half days- students by law need 4 hours to be considered a day in school. I agree with leaving April break in tact however.   more ›

School Officials Submit Budget to the County; Host Budget Workshop

District gets letter from county, reading program discussed, capital improvements explained

A tentative budget of $129 million for the 2012-13 school year has been submitted to the county superintendent for review, school officials said. Though this year's initial budget presents one of the lowest tax rate increases in history — $92 per average home — West Orange Superintendent Dr. Anthony Cavanna said the district exceeded some cost ratios recommended by the state. During a Monday night budget workshop, Cavanna said he had received a letter from Kathleen Serafino, the executive superintendent for Morris and Sommerset counties, highlighting the district's overages in some areas. Cavanna, however, said the letter was just a recommendation and would not affect the budget. "The message I got from the board is that they are satisfied…

State Aid Increases for West Orange Schools

District will receive $6.8 million in aid for 2012-13 school year

West Orange schools will see a bump in state aid for the 2012-13 school year, state officials announced Thursday. The district is slated to receive a total of $6,809,707 in aid, a roughly 15 percent increase from last year's $5.8 million. "It's absolutely good news," said Laura Lab, West Orange Board of Education President. She said the additional $916,170 in aid was "substantial" and a "game changer." "We need to prioritize the upcoming budget to see what additional programs we can supplement that were cut two years ago, when we lost all the state aid," Lab said. She added the district had outstanding concerns with their buildings and that the cash could also be used to offset needs in the schools. School officials, though, remain deep in…

The correlation between educational spending and educational achievement is either zero or negative. However, directing funds to the classroom and specific educational programs can help with educational achievement. Also we in West Orange are at a tipping point with taxation and the real estate market. Thus the wise public policy move in this situation is to focus on directing the educational …   more ›
