NJ Spotlight Interactive Map shows West Orange residents contributed more to the President's re-election campaign than to the former governor's campaign.
West Orange residents overwhelmingly donated more to President Obama’s re-election campaign this past year, with more than $214,000 in contributions, according to a new interactive map released. Obama’s campaign also received more than 12 times the amount of contributions than Mitt Romney’s campaign received. The map, compiled by NJ Spotlight from an analysis of Federal Election Commission data, breaks down the number and amount of contributions by zip code. Each zip code is colored red, Republican, or blue, Democrat, depending on which party received the most in contributions. West Orange voters continued the trend of supporting Democratic presidential candidates at the polls again in 2012, overwhelmingly supporting Barack Obama, according to the latest figures. Township residents supported the president’s re-election bid, casting 13,075 votes, or 69 percent of the total vote for Obama Tuesday night to 5,353 votes for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney based on unofficial returns. As the ballots pour in from Sandy-ravaged New Jersey, Robert Menendez has emerged victorious in reclaiming his U.S. Senate seat against Republican challenger Joe Kyrillos. With just over half of polling districts reporting, state Republicans have conceded victory to Menendez. The U.S. senator leads 58 percent to 40 percent as of 10:30 p.m., according to CBS News. Donald Payne Jr. secures seat previously held by his late father
The Payne family name lives on in New Jersey's 10th Congressional District, with Donald Payne Jr. easily winning Tuesday the seat previously held by his late father. Although many votes may not be counted for days as election officials in three counties sort through various provisional and mail-in ballots, Payne had already racked up a nearly 10-1 margin of victory over his Republican challenger with most districts reporting around 10:30 pm Tuesday. The election was no contest for Payne, a Democrat who won June's primaries just as handily. Payne collected 157,821 votes, compared to Brian Keleman's 18,547. The deadline for electronic voting has been extended after email and fax ballots caused headaches Tuesday throughout the state. A high volume of requests overwhelmed county officials, including in Morris where the chairman of the Morris County Board of Elections told NJ.com it may take weeks to determine the outcome of some close local elections. Morris County issues began to surface on Monday when it was discovered some information on the county clerk's website directing voters not able to get to the polls was either inaccurate or misleading, NJ.com reported. After millions of New Jersey residents spent most of last week without power, gas, and even lost their homes, Tuesday’s general election was likely the farthest from their minds. But for politicians who have continued to campaign through the storm, the election has remained a focus. “It’s been a very, very difficult procedure because of the storm,” Essex County Freeholder Vice President Patricia Sebold said. Most West Orange polling places will be open as usual on Tuesday, however three polling places will remain closed because of the storm, according to township officials The following polling places have moved: Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. in New Jersey. For more information or questions regarding voting, please contact the West Orange Clerk’s Office at (973) 325-4155. Voters can also vote by email or fax on Tuesday. For more information, contact the Essex County Clerk's office at 973-621-5178, or at info@essexclerk.com A ballot and waiver form will be send to the email or fax number requested and must be returned the same day. Voters may request a mail ballot, which must be returned by 8 p.m. Tuesday.
