Police Blotter: Couple Stabbed, Assault, Drug Possession

Information provided by the West Orange Police Department

A husband and wife were allegedly stabbed in front of their home on Liberty Street, police said. The man had cuts on the side of his neck and his wife had cuts all over both hands, according to the police report. Police said there was blood all over the front steps and the door leading to the home when they arrived on scene last Thursday night. As the couple exited their vehicle around 11 p.m., the suspect approached the man and began stabbing him in the neck, police said. The wife tried to help her husband and was cut multiple times on her hands. The suspect then ran and drove off in his car, authorities said. Police said the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute involving an affair with the suspect's wife. No description of the …

Police Union Marks One Year Anniversary of Layoffs with Billboard

Sign on Main Street thanks public for their support, cites historically low numbers of police

A green billboard stood conspicuously along the bend of Main Street and Ashwood Terrace as parade-goers marched through West Orange's downtown corridor for the 61st annual St. Patrick's Day Parade Sunday. The sign, endorsed by the West Orange Patrolmen's Benevolent Association and the Superior Officer's Association, read: "Happy St. Patrick's Day: March 15, 2012 marked the one year anniversary of layoffs and demotions. Working at manpower levels not seen in 30 years. Still dedicated to protecting and serving the citizens of West Orange. We thank you for your continued support." Police Blotter: Disorderly Conduct, Warrant Arrests, Credit Card Fraud

A man was repeatedly struck in the face while in Dunkin Donuts on Main Street, police said. The victim told authorities he was assaulted after he tried to intervene when a man was making derogatory comments toward a woman. He was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital after the incident Sunday night, police said. A man was arrested for disorderly conduct Sunday night on Freeman Street, police said. According to the incident report, a large crowd of 75 people were standing in the middle of Freeman Street and told police a man, hiding behind one of the houses, had been involved in an altercation. Police Blotter: Home Break-ins, Stolen Cars Recovered

A home on Forest Hill Road was allegedly ransacked Monday, police said. The victim told police her home was burglarized between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. She said a pocketbook and Ray Ban sunglasses worth $180 were taken from her residence. According to the police report, the items were taken from the first floor but the second floor had also been ransacked. The victim informed police her daughter was sleeping in a room on the second floor during the burglary. The daughter told police she heard dogs barking but did not make much of the noise. Police said the suspect(s) allegedly entered through an unlocked side door. Police Blotter: Home Burglaries, Man Crashes into Police Car

A Brooklyn man allegedly rammed his car into a parked police vehicle while drunk, police said. Wesley Lawyer, 20, was charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving, avoiding a traffic signal and refusing to take a breathalyzer test. A police officer said he heard a loud crash while inside Krauzer's on Central Avenue Saturday. He said he exited the store and saw Lawyer's 1998 Chrysler backing up in the lot after crashing into the side of the unoccupied police car. A home on White Street in West Orange was allegedly burglarized, police said.The owner told police roughly $5,000 of copper fittings were taken from two bathrooms in the home. Armed Robbery on Whittingham Place

One man suffers minor injuries after he refused to hand over his backpack

Authorities are investigating an armed robbery on Whittingham Place and Kingsley Street in West Orange. Police said an 18-year-old West Orange resident was walking down Whittingham Place Friday around 3 a.m. when two men came out of a dark-grey car brandishing silver handguns. The two men approached the victim and said, "run your pockets and stop looking at me," according to police. The resident emptied out his pockets of $8 in cash and put the money on the ground, the report said. The 18 year old was then punched in the face after he refused to turn over his backpack, police said. He sustained a minor cut and bruising to his right eye, according to the police report. Police Arrest Two for Armed Robbery at Heritage Restaurant

Two suspects still remain at large

Police have arrested two men in connection with an armed robbery last week at Heritage Restaurant on Valley Road in West Orange. Three masked men entered the newly-opened restaurant the night of Feb. 19, telling everyone inside to "get on the floor," according to police. Brandishing handguns, the men took four cell phones, cash from the register and liquor from the bar, authorities said. An investigation of the incident led to the arrests last Friday, Jessica Glicker, public information officer for the township, announced today. Police arrested Abdul Shareef, 21, of Orange. Armed Robbery at Heritage Restaurant

Four cell phones and $170 taken

Authorities are investigating an armed robbery at the newly opened Heritage Restaurant on Valley Road in West Orange. Police said three men came into the restaurant around 11:45 p.m. Sunday and told everyone inside to "get on the floor." At least two of the men were brandishing handguns, they said. Four cell phones were taken from people inside the restaurant and $170 in cash was stolen from the cash register, officials said. According to the police report, the two men with guns were wearing dark-colored clothing and dark-colored bandanas around their faces. The incident remains under investigation. Heritage Restaurant opened its doors to the community last month and serves African and Caribbean food.

Sinkhole Found on Northfield Avenue and Valley Road

No traffic delays or road closures so far

A sinkhole is developing on the intersection of Northfield Avenue and Valley Road in West Orange. Officials on scene this afternoon said the sinkhole is about two-and-a-half feet wide and one foot deep. As of 2:30 p.m., traffic continued to flow along all lanes of Northfield Avenue and Valley Road and no streets had been closed. An orange cone has been placed on top of the hole for precaution as West Orange police wait for county officials to arrive. Both streets are county roads. Police did not know what caused the sinkhole but said there had been recent construction in the area. Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

Police Union Files Grievance Against Township

Union says health benefits not equal or better for retired members

Dominic Bertoldi, 48, said he worked as a police officer in West Orange for more than 20 years and never had any issues with his health coverage, but now retired, he said filing medical claims has been "nothing but a nightmare. It's been nothing but problems."   And the police officer's union — Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association Local 25 — said Bertoldi isn't the only one.   The union has filed a grievance on behalf of its retired members, claiming the township made changes in the retirees' health care coverage that violated the terms of their contract.   "We grieve the current health benefits that the township had adopted in the last 18 months, due to the lack of being equal or better from our prior health benefits, for retired members," …
