Lights, Camera, Action: West Orange Film Festival Returns

West Orange moviegoers can enjoy classic films on a big screen, in their own town.

  The 8th Annual Classic West Orange Film Festival kicks off on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. with Roman Polanski’s 1974 classic film noir "Chinatown," starring Jack Nicholson. The Star Ledger’s Stephen Whitty will host the post-screening film chat. The eight-week Sunday film series runs through Feb. 24. All shows are at the AMC Theatre at the Essex Green Shopping Center on Prospect Avenue in West Orange. “They will be played on a big screen, the way these films were meant to be seen,” said Ken Mandel, the festival’s organizer and a West Orange filmmaker. Mandel said films are chosen with input from audiences and film experts. “The line-up is very eclectic, with some old favorites and some relative unknowns,” he said. Here's the rest of the …

'Day in West Orange' Opens at the JCC

Photo exhibit documents life in the township

The West Orange Arts Council premiered its "A Day in West Orange Photo Documentary" at an opening reception at the Cooperman JCC MetroWest on Sunday, March 11.   Seventeen area photographers  canvassed the township during a 24-hour day Sept. 21, 2011. They created a dramatic photo documentary featuring the places and faces of West Orange. More than 200 residents and friends of the photographers and Arts Council attended the event. 'A Day in the Life of West Orange' Exhibit Opens Sunday

New exhibit features work of 17 local photographers capturing images of everyday life in and around the township.

Seventeen area photographers were set loose in West Orange last September with one goal — to take photographs that captured the township’s diverse population, and reflect its daily community activities in the workplace, at school, business, recreational facilities and houses of worship. The project, organized by West Orange Arts Council Vice Chair Mansa K. Mussa, will be on display as part of the exhibit, “A Day in the Life of West Orange” at the Leon & Toby Cooperman Jewish Community Center beginning on March 11. “I didn’t know much about West Orange when I moved here seven years ago,” Mussa said in a release. “I found a vibrant community with a jazz club, a museum, a great library and a functioning arts organization.” Mussa thought the …
