Township Continues Rebranding Efforts in Marketing Campaign

New logo, tag line created

West Orange's marketing initiative is rebranding the township as the place "where in invention lives." The new tag line is part of the marketing campaign led by resident Patrick Sutherland who was hired by the administration last August. Sutherland, owner of Direct Ignition, is working together with MyTown Marketing and Signal Graphics on the campaign. The companies and Sutherland were contracted for a total of roughly $30,000. Project manager and public information officer for the township Jessica Glicker reported on the progress of the campaign before township council last week. Glicker said the town had made steady progress toward incorporating the new logo and tag line in various local commissions. She said the township's official …

Essex House, Township Reach Settlement on Noise Violations

Restaurant will not have public parties

Essex House Restaurant in West Orange won't be throwing any major parties after the business reached a settlement with the township regarding two charges related to public disturbance and noise. During a meeting before the West Orange Board of Alcoholic Beverage Control Tuesday night, headed by the township council, a resolution was approved prohibiting the restaurant from throwing public parties promoted through the Internet. Kenneth Kayser, assistant attorney for the township, said the charges stemmed from multiple parties since 2010 and most recently, a February party that caused public disturbance and required police enforcement from West Orange and surrounding towns. "The main source of the problem is the noise," Kayser said. He added…

Student Suspended, Arrested for High School Hoax

Police said student yelled 'There's a shooter!' in the school

A West Orange High School senior was arrested and suspended for claiming there was a gunman within the school and inciting false public alarm, authorities said. The 17-year-old allegedly yelled "He's got a gun!" and "There's a shooter!" while in the boys' bathroom around 1:30 p.m. Friday, police said. Both claims, however, proved to be a hoax, according to the incident report. Police officers, who heard the boy's shouts, were patrolling the school for added security following the discovery of threatening graffiti in the boys' bathroom earlier that week. The teen, who was not identified because he is a minor, is a special education student, according to Superintendent Dr. Anthony Cavanna. "I think he heard rumors (about the graffiti) and …

UPDATE: Contaminated Water Site in West Orange, Orange May be Added to EPA's Most Hazardous List

Authorities say polluted area poses 'no imminent danger' to public drinking water

[Editor's note: This story was updated March 15 at 4:30 p.m. to include a response from the mayor. To view his full statement, see attached document.] The Orange Valley Regional Ground Water site that runs along both West Orange and Orange has been flagged by the US Environmental Protection Agency as possibly one of the most hazardous waste sites in the country. EPA officials proposed Tuesday to add the area to its Superfund National Priorities List due to ground water contamination. Authorities, however, maintain the contaminated site poses no danger to public drinking water. Mayor Robert Parisi released a statement Thursday afternoon assuring residents the township's drinking water was safe. "I can confirm that the homes in West Orange …

Township to Use Quieter, Eco-Friendly Trash Trucks

West Orange one of first municipalities chosen for initiative

The sound of banging garbage trucks early in the morning may have quieted down in recent weeks following the township's decision to employ "greener" vehicles. West Orange replaced their diesel-powered vehicles for quieter and eco-friendlier natural gas trucks, officials announced earlier this month. West Orange was one of the first municipalities chosen by Suburban Disposal, Inc., a provider of services in the solid waste industry, to try out the new vehicles. "The vehicles that currently operate in the township consume more fuel than other municipalities, partly because of the large area of West Orange," said Kerry Roselle, owner of Roselle Suburban Disposal.  "With these savings, Suburban Disposal can expand our goal to reach a 100 …

Council Approves Additional Funding for Downtown Streetscape Project

Third change order will allow proper installation of traffic lights

The township council approved additional cash for the construction project along the downtown corridor in West Orange. The change order for $74,455 will be used to adequately install traffic signals, Leonard Lepore, municipal engineer and director of public works for the township, told the council Tuesday. He said the foundation of nine traffic signals needs to be redesigned due to conflicts in the ground. According to Lepore, the standard foundation required by the county for the signals does not fit along several parts of Main Street. As an alternative, construction workers will have to burrow deeper and use a concrete casing to install the lights with specialized equipment, he said. The improvements to the downtown are part of a $2 …

@ Mac: The problem is that the project involves dealing with 100+ year old infrastucture in an enviroment that can't be completely closed off to traffic while it is being accomplished. There's an old adage in construction that the worst place to be working is in a hole in a hole in a hole...and that's essentially what this kind of project is. There simply wasn't the same attention to detail and …   more ›

Township Council Reintroduces Edison Redevelopment Bond Ordinance

Residents question project during nearly two hours of public comment

[Editor's note: This story was updated March 7 at 3:30 a.m.] An ordinance authorizing West Orange to issue $6.3 million in general obligation bonds to the developer of the Edison property on Main Street was reintroduced Tuesday night. The ordinance was approved on first reading in a 4-1 vote by the township council. Councilman Joe Krakoviak dissented, voting "no" to introduce the ordinance and approve it on first reading. The bond ordinance was first passed in a February meeting but was withdrawn after a procedural flaw with its introduction, according to the administration. They said the township's supplemental debt statement was prepared but not on file in the township clerk's office prior to the Feb. 21 meeting. "There are still, in my …
