Idling car taken from Verona residence on Friday, police said.
Verona police were involved in a short police chase on Friday, March 29 through the township and into West Orange, officials said Monday. The car, a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee, was taken from a Claremont Avenue residence while the owner left it running with the keys inside, police said. “Officers responded and saw the vehicle on Pompton and Bloomfield avenues,” police said. The vehicle was last seen heading south on Prospect Avenue into West Orange, police said. As of Monday, April 1, the vehicle had not been recovered.
Council President Victor Cirilo of West Orange was arrested and issued several tickets, police said.

West Orange Council President Victor Cirilo was arrested on drunk driving charges in Verona, police said. Police stopped Cirilo just after midnight on Nov. 9 and smelled “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage,” police said. After a series of field sobriety tests, the Council President was arrested and taken to police headquarters where he was processed and released pending a court appearance. Cirilo was charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and issued several motor vehicle summonses, police said. The Township of West Orange declined comment, according to Jessica Glicker, a township spokeswoman.
