O’Neill will serve as interim superintendent for West Orange schools until June 2013, the board announced at its meeting Tuesday night. “Even though I have spent the bulk of my career elsewhere,” said O’Neill after being appointed by the board on Tuesday, “my style is to become fully immersed, and to be an advocate and integral part of what happens ... in West Orange. The council preferred to hold a special workshop at the end of the month to discuss the expected tax increase, among other things. In other news, local students traveled to Montclair State University to learn the basics of reporting in a week-long program called Write on Sports. The following is a rundown of the top stories this week in town.

Board of Education places Superintendent Anthony Cavanna on leave pending further investigation into 'district issues.'
Superintendent Anthony Cavanna was suspended by the West Orange Board of Education on Wednesday. Cavanna was placed on paid administrative leave pending further investigation into “district issues,” said Board President Laura Lab. The board also voted not to rehire Cavanna as superintendent of the district after his contract expires in June 2013. Cavanna was not present at the meeting that evening. The board had unanimously appointed Cavanna to a four-year term as superintendent in 2009. Before coming to West Orange, Cavanna worked in schools in New Jersey and New York as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and deputy superintendent of schools. Assistant Superintendent Donna Rando was appointed by the board to act as …
