West Orange High Places Ad for Winter Coaches

The district has posted positions for Boys' Basketball, Girls' Basketball, Bowling, Ice Hockey, Swimming, Winter Track, Wrestling.

The West Orange school district has posted openings for winter head coaching positions at the high school. The ad posted on nj.com is for: According to the ad, Substitute Certification Required, Teaching Certificate Preferred.  The district asks applicants to include a resume, letter of interest, and a copy of certification by the deadline of April 25. Applications must be sent online only to: http://www.applitrack.com/woboe/onlineapp/

Essex County Wrestler Tops Dad's Record

James Caldwell High School freshman Dean Caravela surpasses father's record set in 1986, as well as 2004 school record.

Breaking a school record is one way to make your parents proud. But what happens when that record was formerly held by your dad? James Caldwell High School wrestler Dean Caravela achieved 35 wins his freshman year, the most in a single season in the program’s history. It’s a record his father Tom Caravela set in 1986, when he went 29-3 as a senior grappler with the Chiefs. The record was challenged by Blake Maffei, Mike Kwapniewski and Steve Martell, the latter who went 33-0 in his 2004 state championship season. Asked last week if he feels badly about surpassing his dad’s record, the 14-year-old with dark cropped hair and a big smile which reveals his braces, shook his head, looked at his father and said, “No.” Tom responded, “I’ll tell …

West Orange Cobras Win Youth Summer League

The WO Cobras defeat Millburn in the championship game.

  A West Orange youth baseball team recently defeated Millburn to win first place in a local summer league and bring home the title.  The West Orange Cobras 9U Baseball Team won the Summer Suburban regular season and playoff championships this month. The local team defeated Millburn 6-4.  The regular season title came down to the last game of the season, with both teams sharing a record of 11-2. Millburn took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but West Orange battled back scoring runs in the first, second, third and fifth innings to win 6-4. West Orange Slams Science Park, 11-3, to Advance in Greater Newark Tournament

The West Orange Mountaineers rout the Science Park Chargers to advance in the prestigious Greater Newark Tournament. West Orange sets season-high marks.

West Orange has had its shares of ups and downs in the rigorous Super Essex Conference.  West Orange plays in the American Division with numerous state-ranked teams such as Seton Hall Prep, Montclair, and Millburn. The Mountaineers currently stand at 3-8. However, five of their eight losses have been by three runs or less, and they have led in nine out of 11 games. With the Great Newark Tournament underway, West Orange knows anything can happen throughout Essex County. “We have been in every game we have played in,” West Orange head coach Stephan Zichella said. “We are young and have little varsity experience, but I am real proud of the guys thus far.” Zichella and his staff could not have been happier Saturday as they earned their third …

Team played on NBA court for six minutes, high-fived cheerleaders and Nets fans

Making the sixth grade traveling basketball team — cool. Finishing the Season 13-1 and going to the playoffs — awesome. Playing during half-time of a Nets game — priceless. As basketball players at 11 and 12 years old, you are accustomed to feeling the excitement of your parents when you're playing a game. The embarrassing cheers and screams coming from your mom and dad are something you realize you just have to get used to. But one night last week changed everything for 11 West Orange boys. The West Orange Recreation Department sixth grade Boys Travel Basketball Team led by head coach Royce Russell and assistant coach Joe Cubero, got a whole new level of crowds and cheers last week.
