The first-ever South Orange turkey trot drew a crowd
Delon Nelson of D & I Fitness hosted an informal Thursday morning run at Floods Hill in South Orange. It was such a success that Nelson plans to make the run annual event. The Turkey Trot drew nearly 50 runners and walkers, eager to loop Floods Hill and the Duck Pond area three times. Runners from South Orange, West Orange, Maplewood and Union attended the event. Nelson greeted the early-morning crowd with fruit, water and a healthy dose of holiday motivation. "My objective is to get folks moving before we start eating," he said. Nelson said "D & I is a small fitness studio based in South Orange. Our members were interested in doing a run before classes on Thanksgiving morning." Nelson decided to "put it out there for anyone to take part …

Stores are opening earlier than ever on Thanksgiving to grab Black Friday shoppers. Toys 'R Us, Walmart, Kmart and Sears open their doors at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Target opens at 9 p.m. Many others open at midnight or very early Friday morning. Several stores are offering waves of doorbusters. Many also are advertising online deals, which include free shipping, and Black Friday prices all day Thanksgiving. The early start to Black Friday has even prompted some opponents to start petitions against the practice. Don't forget Saturday is Small Business Saturday! It used to be $400. But because of Hurricane Sandy, all you have to do is spend $300 by November 22, and you can get a free turkey for your holiday table.
It's all to help people affected by Hurricane Sandy. ShopRite has lowered the amount shoppers must spend in order to qualify for a free Thanksgiving turkey, according to Supermarket News. The traditional ShopRite turkeyfest happens once a year. During that time, shoppers who spend a certain amount of money can pick up a free turkey for their Thanksgiving table. This year, the supermarket recognizes that people who were affected by the recent hurricane probably didn't have food shopping on their minds - especially with areas of central New Jersey not having electricity, in some cases, for more than a week. The free turkey threshold was $400. ShopRite has changed that to $300, Supermarket News reports. The promotion, which runs from October…

Gas rationing will end, but stores remain crowded and the commute is difficult
The second full week post-Sandy brought some good news to the area: gas rationing ends Tuesday; power is back in most parts of town; NJ Transit has begun running Midtown Direct trains. However, life is far from normal days after the superstorm knocked out power for thousands in Essex County. Many residents note long lines for commuter buses and trains, and, surprisingly, in food stores. "Every store I've seen has been packed," said Julia Stern of South Orange. "I think we all need to restock refrigerators and freezers. Add to that the disruption of all the travel; the food couldn't travel either." And with many residents getting power back over the weekend, local grocery stores have been crowded. "Not to mention," says shopper Amanda …

Governor's new gas plan and restrictions imposed by station owners results in slightly shorter waits in some places, same story in others.
At noon Saturday, Gov. Chris Christie's even-odd gas rationing mandate went into effect for 12 New Jersey counties, including Bergen, Essex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex and Warren. The result, in some cases, was modestly shorter gas lines than have been seen in the days since Sandy hit. Of course, other stations featured the same long lines and interminable waits that have dotted North Jersey in recent days.
