Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.
On November 24, American Express will present the third annual Small Business Saturday. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked, according to the credit card company's website. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in West Orange, according to the website. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities, according to American Express' website. This year, some of the stores …

Having worked at major corporations all his life, local business owner Moses Scott says he's never been happier — Scott's small business, Right at Home, provides home care and assistance to the elderly in Essex County. "It's the most satisfying business I've ever worked in," he told Patch. "I bring a smile to people's faces ... we bring joy to people's lives." Scott began his business nearly seven years ago in West Orange and joined the Chamber of Commerce in an effort to promote local shopping and network with other independent business owners. This Saturday is the second annual Small Business Saturday. Lodged between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the day aims to promote local shopping, a feat Scott says is vital to the economy. "We …

It's a lesson every woman should learn: How to physically defend herself if confronted or grabbed by an attacker. And, believe it or not, all it takes is a quick flick of the wrist and a throaty yell. Essex County Patch editors recently got a hands-on lesson in warding off potential predators during a free women's self-defense class at Sovereign Martial Arts in Belleville. The hour-long session, taught by Senseis Edgardo Moran and George Lopez, included step-by-step instructions on palm heel strikes (a quick, yet powerful, move that can shatter the nose) and how to quickly escape a predator's grasp. Being vocal when performing a palm heel strike is key, according to Edgardo, who explained a hearty grunt can increase the intensity – and …

Free advice from retired executive volunteers
When my partner and I first had the idea for our product, we didn't realize how much there was to learn about starting a business. You just make something and sell it, right? If only it were that easy. One of the earliest and best bits of advice I've received is that we should "get help from everywhere" we can get it. I started with a stack of books on business from the library. Then I read blogs and business magazines, telling everyone I could that we were starting a business. I asked the opinions of friends and family. I asked the woman who owns the store where we first bought fabric. Everyone has been so helpful and eager to see us succeed. But one of the best places you can get business — and in particular a start-up — advice from is …

Weekly column will feature entrepreneurial endeavors
I have been trying to start my own business, in one form or another, since I first petitioned my parents to let me set up a lemonade stand on a trafficless residential street in Bay Shore, Long Island. I was sure it would be a success. They said no and I pouted for the rest of the day. I was six. Then in my working life, I was a freelancer. For years, I worked as a bookkeeper, watching over and tracking other people's businesses. Most of the companies I worked for were small businesses, often a sole proprietorship, occasionally a partnership. Most had fewer than ten employees. I learned a lot from watching other people run their businesses. As a bookkeeper, you get to see the engine of the business: the money. You are often in on closed-…

I went to shop at Schneider's Hardware this morning, and they actually talked me out of completing a project I was thinking of. I spent no money. That's what I love about small businesses: no pressure, and honesty :)   more ›
