Report Card Gives Saint Barnabas Top-Tier Rating

Survey by national health care organization The Leapfrog Group reveals medical center maintained overall excellence in 2012.

Saint Barnabas Medical Center continued to excel in overall safety in 2012, a report card issued by a health care quality organization revealed Wednesday. In its annual survey, the national nonprofit organization The Leapfrog Group said the hospital maintained its A rating based on 26 benchmarks including preventable medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections for similar type national general acute-care hospitals, according to a report on NorthJersey.com. But the hospital was not alone when garnering the top grade, the report said, as 40 percent of New Jersey's hospitals received A's from the organization. Because of that positive feedback, the state was elevated from 15th to sixth place in national rankings of hospital safety. "…

The Weight Loss Institute of New Jersey at Saint Barnabas has several tips to avoid gaining weight during the holiday season.

The holidays are here and often food is the centerpiece of festivities and celebrations, but the holiday season doesn’t mean you have to pack on the pounds or add inches to your waist. The Weight Loss Institute of New Jersey wants you to celebrate and enjoy your favorite foods; the key is moderation and balance.  Here are some tips: Be realistic – trying to lose weight during the holidays may be a “self-defeating” goal—a better goal would be to maintain weight. Get moving! Find activities the whole family can do such as walking, biking, hiking or bowling. With cold and flu season upon us, Saint Barnabas offers some tips to protect yourself.

Saint Barnabas Offering Free Bereavement Support for the Holidays

Saint Barnabas Medical Center is offering a free eight-week support group for those who lost loved ones through death

The holiday season can be a difficult time for those who recently experienced the death of a loved one. The Pastoral Care Department at Saint Barnabas Medical Center is offering a free public bereavement support group to help others through the period from Thanksgiving to the New Year.  The support group will meet every week from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday from November 13 to January 8 at the interfaith chapel inside Saint Barnabas.  Group discussions will cover a variety of topics, including how to handle sadness and pain and adjusting to life changes. Participation is limited and people must register and speak with a bereavement councilor to see if the group is right for them, said the Rev. Thomas Craig, director of pastoral care.  “…

Saint Barnabas to Hold Breast Cancer Symposium

Saint Barnabas will hold the symposium among a myriad of events.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The Department of Psychosocial Support Services in the Cancer Program at Saint Barnabas Medical Center will sponsor a free Breast Cancer Symposium on Monday, October 29 from 6-9 p.m. in the hospital’s Islami Auditorium.  Richard Michaelson, MD, Chief Medical Director, and a multidisciplinary team of experts will address how to make the most of your doctor visits, lymphedema reduction and innovative treatments, employment and insurance issues and treatment for anxiety and depression.  A light dinner will be provided and free parking will be available in the main visitors’ lot. Snooki Gives Birth in Livingston

Saint Barnabas Medical Center is the birthplace of 'Jersey Shore' star's first child, Lorenzo Dominic LaValle.

Welcome Lorenzo, meet Mama Snooki. Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, one of the stars of 'Jersey Shore,' gave birth this morning at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.  Lorenzo Dominic LaValle was born just before 3 a.m., NJ.com reports. The baby boy weighs 6 pounds, 5 ounces and is healthy according to a report by MTV. Snooki is engaged to reality TV star Jionni LaValle. This is her first child.

Saint Barnabas to Celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day

September 9 will be the 25th Anniversary of National Cancer Survivors Day.

In recognition of the 25th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day, the Saint Barnabas Cancer Program is inviting their patients to a Celebration of Life Luncheon on Sunday, September 9.  This special event celebrates the courage of cancer survivors, the fortitude of their health caregivers, and the support of their loved ones.  The afternoon is hosted by The Saint Barnabas Cancer Program and will take place from 12 to 3 p.m. at Mayfair Farms, 481 Eagle Rock Avenue, West Orange, NJ 07052. Saint Barnabas Medical Center is inviting children, aged 4-8, to a free Teddy Bear Clinic on Wednesday, July 18.

Saint Barnabas Medical Center is inviting children, aged 4-8, to a free Teddy Bear Clinic on Wednesday, July 18.  Kids can bring their teddy bears or favorite stuffed animals to the luau themed-clinic to learn about medical equipment and procedures to become comfortable with visiting a hospital.  Together, children and their “patients” will visit a series of interactive play stations so that children will have a good time learning that they don’t have to fear a trip to the hospital. “The Teddy Bear Clinic is designed to be similar to the experiences that children and their family members might have when they go for an annual checkup or are admitted into the hospital,” says Danielle Martino, a Child Life Therapist at Saint Barnabas. “…

Teddy Bear Clinic Eases Kids' Fears of Hospitals

Registration ends Friday for event that helps families be comfortable at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

If being in a hospital is scary for adults, it can be terrifying for children. To lessen their anxieties about being in the hospital, Saint Barnabas Medical Center is inviting children ages 4 through 8 to bring their teddy bears or favorite stuffed animals to a Teddy Bear Clinic on July 20. (Registration ends July 15). The event will follow an open house format where children will learn about medical equipment and procedures to become comfortable with visiting a hospital.
