'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' at Roosevelt

Performances Feb 16-18 features Pleasant Valley Productions actors.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat opened at Roosevelt Middle School, 36 Gilbert Place on Saturday night. Pleasant Valley Productions will present performances at the Frank Corrado Auditorium at the school. The show features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice is directed by Camille Vecchio-DiLorenzo with musical direction by Ilene Greenbaum and choreography by Cindy Jung Mc Arthur. It is produced by Howie Tilkin. Performances for Saturday, Feb. 16 begin at 7 p.m. The Sunday, Feb. 17 matinee performance is at 2 p.m. and a special Presidents Day performance on Feb. 18 is at 3 p.m.  The cast features local actors, singers and dancers.  Tickets are $20 for the general public, $18 for students and seniors with special…

Bomb Threats Temporarily Close Roosevelt Middle School, JCC

Both the school and JCC reopened after being evacuated for close to 90 minutes, authorities said.

Bomb threats at both Roosevelt Middle School and the Jewish Community Center forced the evacuation of both buildings Monday, police said.  Both buildings reopened about 90 minutes later after they were deemed safe by the county bomb squad.  At around 9:48 a.m., a call came in from an anonymous man, claiming to have planted a bomb in the school and the JCC, according to West Orange police Sgt. John Palardy.  Police alerted officials in both buildings, who implemented their emergency protocol plans. Members, staff and approximately 240 children in the JCC preschool program were evacuated,  according to the emergency plan.  The children were escorted to the Jewish Community House, adjacent to the JCC, said a JCC staff member.  The students …

Middle Schools Use 'March Madness' to Ready Students for College

8th graders at Roosevelt, Liberty schools write letters to perspective colleges

At just 13 years old Kellen Young has a five-year plan. Young, an eighth grade student at Liberty Middle School, dreams of going to Syracuse University to study broadcast journalism, cheer on one of the top basketball teams on the east coast and one day become a broadcaster for the NBA. "It's just calling me," he told Patch. "This is going to be me in a couple of years." Young, along with a select group of reading students at Liberty, has spent weeks researching colleges as part of the school's "March Madness" project. Roosevelt Middle School Kicks Off Reading Program

Program will encourage students to read outside the classroom

Roosevelt Middle School kicked off its new literacy campaign with an assembly Friday afternoon to promote reading outside of the classroom.   The Roosevelt Reading Passport Program, developed through the literacy committee at the school, will encourage the students to log their additional reading time in exchange for prizes such as raffle tickets and a movie social during school. During the hour-long assembly, groups of student performed to pump up the excitement around the program. "Reading is an important part of intellectual growth, it's a way for you to gain knowledge and expand your minds. Middle Schoolers Compete in Math Competition

Roosevelt and Liberty Middle Schools participate in national "MATHCOUNTS" competition against other students from throughout New Jersey

For some of the students in West Orange, the chance to go to school on Saturday was actually something they were really looking forward to. Students from Roosevelt and Liberty Middle Schools competed in this year's regional "MATHCOUNTS" competition held at Liberty on Saturday. Students participating in the afterschool math clubs were invited to take part. The "MATHCOUNTS" Competition is a national middle school competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging "bee" style contests. Around 200 students from around the state attend the competition. The format of the competition is as follows:
