Two motorcycles sped past a Verona Police Officer going more than 80 miles per hour before disappearing into West Orange.
Two motorcyclists nearly struck a Verona police officer before eluding pursuing police in a high-speed chase through West Orange on Monday, police said. The Verona officer had pulled over a car on Lakeside Avenue in Verona at around 5:50 p.m., when the motorcyclists sped past going at least 80 miles per hour, said Verona Chief of Police Douglas Huber. The officer got in his car and attempted to follow the motorcyclists, but at that point they had already disappeared into West Orange, he said. “It wasn't much of a chase,” Huber admitted. Verona Police notified West Orange police, who said the motorcyclists continued at a high speed on Pleasant Valley Way before vanishing onto Interstate 280.

A man stole an idling car in West Orange Jan. 24 and evaded police on Route 280 heading into Newark last week, police said. According to West Orange police reports, the car, a white Infinity G37, was reported stolen from an Arverne Road residence at about 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 24. The owner told police, he started his car in his driveway to warm up with the keys inside and doors unlocked. The owner told police he heard the car pull out of his driveway, before seeing it head east on Arverne Road. West Orange police spotted the car on Northfield Avenue heading toward Route 280, officials said, but followed undetected behind the car and ran the license plate.
