Members of the New Jersey Devils appear to help promote youth hockey in Newark
Newark has bred standouts in sports including boxing, baseball, track and field, basketball, football and soccer. A Brick City native has even made his mark in fencing, competing in several Olympics. But hockey? Given the city’s commitment to the sport in recent years, the possibility of a Newarker one day making it to the NHL could be more likely than it’s ever been. “There’s not a huge hockey following in urban areas in general. New Jersey Devils' dance team is looking for 18 spirited dancers

Ladies, dust off those dancing shoes. The Devils Dancers will hold auditions for its 2012-13 team Sunday Aug. 19 at the Prudential Center. Last year more than 100 young women auditions for 18 open spots, including returning dancers from the previous year's team. The dance team will perform at all New Jersey Devils home games and serve as ambassadors of the Devils Army. The team also makes appearances for the New Jersey Devils and the team's philanthropic Devils Care Foundation to bring cheer and offer dance clinics throughout the state during the season. It isn't always pretty. In fact, it rarely is. When the two top ice hockey squads in the New York-New Jersey metro area lace them up, it's always a spectacle. But it's never more so than when the matchups come in the playoffs. Of course, we're talking about the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers (sorry Islanders fans, but the '80s are behind us). The two teams begin their best-of-seven Eastern Conference Finals series Monday night (8; NBC Sports Network) for the right to head to the Stanley Cup Finals. Of course, most fans remember the last time these two faced each other for that right. It was 1994.
