Montclair Beats West Orange in Boys' Tennis

The West Orange boys' teams losses in the quarterfinal round of NJSIAA Tournament Tuesday.

In Tuesday afternoon's game in Montclair, the West Orange High School boys' team came up short in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 New Jersey Interscholastic Athelic Association Tournament. The West Orange team lost to Montclair High School, winning no matches, 0-5, according to NJ.com Montclair's record moves up to 15-8, while West Orange adds a third loss to its record, now 17-3.

Former Teacher Gets Parole After Admitting to Sex with Student

Former West Orange High School teacher, Erica DePalo, 33, of Montclair, was sentenced to a three-year suspended sentence of parole with no jail time Monday afternoon, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

The 33-year-old former West Orange High School teacher who admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student was sentenced Monday and will serve no jail time, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. Erica DePalo, of Montclair, an Essex County Teacher of the Year, was sentenced on Monday, April 29 in Newark Superior Court to a three-year suspended sentence of parole with no jail time. She will also forfeit of her teaching license and be on lifetime supervision under Megan's Law, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office said. Montclair Man Leads Police on Car Chase, Flees into West Orange

William Barba, of Montclair, is wanted on a $75,000 warrant after throwing a cinder block at a parked car and fleeing from police.

Montclair Police are looking for a 22-year-old resident who led officers on a car chase and escaped into West Orange.  Police saw William Barba, of Montclair, get out of a car at the intersection of Fulton and Miller streets on Feb. 21 at about 2:02 a.m. and pick up a piece of cinder block and throw it at a Jeep Grand Cherokee parked on the street. When police pulled up to Barba, he jumped into his tan Buick Regal and fled. Police chased Barba throughout Montclair as he sped through stop signs and traffic lights. At one point, Barba nearly struck a police cruiser head-on, according to police.  Officers ended the pursuit once Barba was identified. MSU to Exhibit Holocaust Survivor's Paintings in Upcoming Exhibit

The works of Warsaw-born Holocaust survivor Israel Bernbaum will be displayed in February at Montclair State University.

A collection of art work preserving visceral images of life in Nazi concentration camps and the uprising of Jews in Warsaw has been donated to Montclair State University.  A wealth of canvasses, murals and drawings from acclaimed artist Israel Bernbaum were given to the university in 2011, and will be on display in an upcoming exhibit.  The works of Bernbaum, a Warsaw-born Holocaust survivor who died in 1993, depict the harsh life of Nazi concentration camps and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943.  The preservation of the paintings is “very important to humanity and we are responding to saving and rescuing works that are one of a kind,” said Teresa Rodriguez, director and curator at the George Segal Gallery at Montclair State. PATH Will Run 24/7 on New Year's Eve, Day

The Port Authority made the announcement on Monday.

  Don't worry about leaving your New Year's Eve Party in Hoboken early. The PATH is running 24/7 on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced on Monday.  This will be the first time the PATH is running round the clock since Hurricane Sandy.  Until then, service runs between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. every day. The Hoboken station was reopened last week after being closed for nearly two months.  From the Port Authority's announcement:  On Tuesday, Dec. 31, New Year’s Eve, between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 p.m., PATH trains will run both ways from Newark to the World Trade Center, Journal Square to 33rd Street, and Hoboken and 33rd Street. Spectacular Geminid Meteor Shower 2012: When to Watch This Week

EarthSky.org is saying that because there will be no moon, 2012 will be a great year to see this meteor shower.

  The final major meteor shower of the year, the Geminid meteor shower 2012, will peak tonight, Thursday, into Friday morning and if you are willing to stay up late you should be able to see a great show.  NASA reports that the Geminids is a relatively young meteor shower, with the first sightings occurring in the 1830s with rates of about 20 per hour. Over time the rate of visible meteors has increased and now viewers can expect to see 80 and 120 meteors per hour at its peak. Earthsky.org reports viewers can begin to watch the Geminids starting at 9 or 10 p.m. on Thursday. The peak will likely be between 1 to 3 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14. Hanukkah: A Not-So 'Minor' Holiday

Montclair resident Daniel Brenner wrote a new song to celebrate the Festival of Lights.

  One local resident says there aren’t enough Hanukkah songs, so he wrote his own.  Daniel Brenner, 42, recently posted a video of his new song about Hanukkah, titled “A Minor Holiday,” which he hopes will bring major attention to the traditionally lesser festival.  “I’ve been, let’s say, recovering from a certain kind of secret jealousy of Christmas my entire life,” said Brenner with a laugh.  Brenner, who is a rabbi, recalled that he was one of the only Jewish kids in his community growing up in Charlotte, N.C., and the yearly Festival of Lights would be drowned out by the ubiquitous Christmas season.  That is where the opening lyric of the song, “In a forest full of Christmas trees, we lit candles for the Maccabees,” comes from, said …

PATH Service to World Trade Center Resumes Monday

Hoboken service remains suspended, but the Port Authority and NJ Transit are offering alternate routes for commuters.

  Getting into New York City will be a little easier this week.  PATH service to the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan will resume Monday morning, according to the PATH website. Trains to the World Trade Center have been canceled since sustaining damage during Hurricane Sandy.  PATH trains will run weekdays between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m in New Jersey through Newark, Harrison, Journal Square, Grove Street and Exchange Place. The final stops in New York City will be at the World Trade Center and 33rd St. Christopher and 9th St. stations in New York City have been restored to full service.  Access for the disabled will be available at Newark and the World Trade Center.  On the weekends, PATH service will operate on a limited schedule and the …

Teacher Arrested for Sex With Student Will Face Grand Jury, Says Prosecutor

Erica DePalo, 33, of Montclair, was arrested in late August on multiple charges of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student.

  The case against a West Orange teacher from Montclair charged with a having sexual relationship with one of her students has been referred to a grand jury, according to the Essex County’s Prosecutor’s Office.  Erica DePalo, 33, pleaded not guilty in September to charges that she had a sex with a 15-year-old student who attended her honors English class at West Orange High School.  DePalo was originally scheduled to appear in court on Monday. However, it was canceled because she will have to appear before a grand jury, said prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Katherine Carter.
