24-Hour Swim-a-thon This Weekend in West Orange

Hundreds of volunteers from Essex, Union and Morris Counties will swim laps to benefit Literacy Volunteers of Morris County, at JCC Metrowest on Saturday to Sunday.

JCC Metrowest will host a 24-hour swim-a-thon, Laps for Literacy, this weekend to benefit Literacy Volunteers of Morris County. The event will go from 7:10 a.m. on Saturday, April 13 until  Sunday, April 14 at 7:10 a.m. The goal is to raise money and awareness for this important organization. Hundreds of swimmer volunteers will collect pledges and donations and swim in shifts lasting anywhere from an hour to all night long.   Literacy Volunteers of Morris County promotes increased literacy and fluency in English for adult learners through the use of dedicated, trained volunteers and support staff.   This non-profit organization serves almost 1,000 students each year, helping them to improve their ability to read, write and speak English, …

Bomb Threats Temporarily Close Roosevelt Middle School, JCC

Both the school and JCC reopened after being evacuated for close to 90 minutes, authorities said.

Bomb threats at both Roosevelt Middle School and the Jewish Community Center forced the evacuation of both buildings Monday, police said.  Both buildings reopened about 90 minutes later after they were deemed safe by the county bomb squad.  At around 9:48 a.m., a call came in from an anonymous man, claiming to have planted a bomb in the school and the JCC, according to West Orange police Sgt. John Palardy.  Police alerted officials in both buildings, who implemented their emergency protocol plans. Members, staff and approximately 240 children in the JCC preschool program were evacuated,  according to the emergency plan.  The children were escorted to the Jewish Community House, adjacent to the JCC, said a JCC staff member.  The students …

Following Hurricane Sandy, a nor'easter and the 2012 election season, the township will get back to work this week. The week begins with town offices closed on Monday, Nov. 12 in recognition of Veteran's Day.  The West Orange Township Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 13 has been canceled. The West Orange Downtown Alliance meeting will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in town hall, conference room 109. An agenda is not yet available. JCC Cuts Ribbon on Aphasia Center

New rehabilitation service helps those in the community.

  Burdened with impaired cognitive and communication skills, those living with aphasia know that everyday can be a struggle. And while recovery is a long road, the local JCC MetroWest is now offering a helping hand.  On Thursday, June 7, members of the JCC and local officials cut the ribbon on the recently added Adler Aphasia Center at the JCC. South Orange Blogger, Columnist, Mom Says "Listen to Your Mother"

Listen to your mother!  For the third time already, listen to your mother or at least to Deborah Goldstein. The South Orange resident, writer, Patch blogger, and mom will read her writing a the third annual LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER reading series.  The series will takes place across ten cities at the end of April and in May including New York City on Sunday May 6th at the JCC in Manhattan at 2p.m. This series was born out of the creative work of mothers who publish online and across the country.
