Authorities Investigating Washington Street Homicide

Lelia Whatley, 22, died of asphyxiation, officials said

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the death of a West Orange woman on Oct. 31. Lelia Whatley, 22, was found unresponsive at her Washington Street residence early last Wednesday and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Katherine Carter, spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Whatley's death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy Monday found she died of asphyxiation, Carter said. Whatley is originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Carter said. No arrests have been made. An investigation by the prosecutor's office is active and ongoing.

Bouncer Shot and Killed At Bar

Police say bouncer was trying to break up a fight in the parking lot of a bar when he was shot to death early Monday morning.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office identified the man shot to death Monday behind Misty's Bar and Restaurant on Main Street as Jacques Nelson, 32, of Orange.  Nelson was employed as a bouncer and was breaking up a fight between patrons in the municipal parking lot when he was fatally shot at approximately 2 a.m., authorities said. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.  Someone from Misty's Bar, located at 277 Main St., was not immediately available for comment.   Early Monday, West Orange police and the prosecutor's office Crime Scene Unit had the parking lot cordoned off with police tape. Video Captures Chestnut Liquor Store Killing

Essex County Prosecutor's Office releases surveillance footage of April 22, 2011, shooting in West Orange.

  A newly released video by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office graphically shows the shooting that resulted in a homicide at Chestnut Liquor Store in West Orange last year. The short video, first posted Thursday on NJ.com, shows the events leading up to the April 22, 2011 incident in which 28-year-old Hillside resident James Wilson was shot and killed.  The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, according to Essex County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly. In store's surveillance video, two men are seen bursting into the liquor store at 8:17 p.m. Both men’s faces were covered, with one man wearing a hood and the other wearing a hat and bandanna around his face. Police Arrest Eight in Liquor Store Drug Raid

Officials said they received complaints from residents about drug related activity in the store

Eight men were arrested in an apparent drug bust after police raided Chestnut Liquors in West Orange Thursday night. The narcotics raid comes months after a store clerk was shot to death inside the store on April 22. The death of James "Tereek" Wilson, a Hillside resident, remains under investigation. Police arrived at the liquor store shortly after 8 p.m.Thursday to serve a search warrant after receiving multiple complaints from residents about narcotic activity in and around the store, according to a release. Two employees were arrested and charged with drug possession; six other individuals were picked up on outstanding warrants, police said.
