The Shillelagh Club is going bald for St. Baldrick’s this weekend when it hosts its annual fundraiser to combat children’s cancer. People will line up on Saturday to get their hair buzzed to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for childhood cancers. Kevin Kinney, of West Caldwell and who is organizing the event, said about 70 people have already signed up to get their heads shaved by volunteer barbers, such as those from JT’s Barbershop in Verona. The event continues to draw people year after year from not only West Orange, but the Caldwells, Verona, Montclair and various other communities. The fundraiser will also feature live bands, step dancers, food, and drinks. “Every year we try…

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society's MuckRuckus MS obstacle course is this weekend at the South Mountain Reservation.
One national charity has found a way to combine fundraising and fun, drawing hundreds of people to South Mountain Reservation this weekend to raise awareness for multiple sclerosis by bringing them to an obstacle course and mud pits. For the past week, crews have been building the MuckRuckus MS obstacle course in the open space across from McLoone’s Boathouse located in the county’s recreation complex. This enormous playground for adults is all part of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s aim to raise money and awareness for the disease. “They are a lot of fun,” said Bonnie Bardinas, communication’s manager of the New Jersey Metro Chapter of the NMSS. “This is a fun-filled kind of event, and it is just another opportunity to raise MS…

Local high school senior Ethan Blake and his friends will spend the summer collecting used books for underprivileged children in Newark.
"Like" the West Orange Patch on Facebook by clicking here. Ethan Blake will take his friends along for a ride on his Essex County Bookmobile this summer to prove the idea that one man's used book is another man's treasure. It is a simple idea, said Blake: solicit people in West Orange and the surrounding communities for their used and unread books, and bring them to underprivileged kids in need. “I have always heard about young kids -- high schoolers and all that -- that start nonprofits while they are still in high school, while they have free time,” said Blake, a senior at the West Orange High School. “I thought it would be a good thing to do during the summer. “This is something that could actually have an effect and really impact…

St. Cloud parents organize 5th grade fundraiser
Teachers, students and parents gathered at Roosevelt Middle School to shoot some hoops to raise cash for St. Cloud’s graduating 5th grade class Thursday night. Tom Hughes and Bob Meaux, parents of two of the graduating students, are the brain children behind the event's conception and execution. Hughes came up with the idea back in February at a town sponsored league game. Hughes said he suggested the idea of having a basketball game to students and faculty. "Bob mentioned parents as well and here we are months later," he said. To start the festivities, more than 150 attendees listened to 5th grader Nia Sorbino's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Prior to taking the stage she said she was "nervous but also excited." Then she held her…

Help a school, get a bargain, bring in customers
Spring is the season for school fundraisers, which means bargains and parties, all for a good cause. Last year was my son's first year at Playhouse Nursery School in West Orange. The school is partially co-operative, which means that the school depends on parents for help with anything from being the “helping parent” during class, to working on community outreach, to setting up and running parenting workshops, to (everyone's favorite activity…) fundraising. Myself and another first-year mom somehow ended up in charge of the school's big annual fundraiser, also known as The Basket Raffle (I just got a little chill just from the words, as my former co-chair will when she reads this. Not the good kind of chill either, more like the chill of …
