Council works on old and new business.
A resolution to amend the July 2011 contract for the installation of hi-tech equipment in police vehicles, as well as several other debt-related issues, dominated the conversation at last week's township council meeting. The council discussed modifying the electronic ticketing payment contract for the ten upgraded police cars so that the 809 tickets issued prior to December 31 could count toward the 10,000-ticket minimum for 2012. The topic was brought to the council by West Orange resident Mark Meyerowitz, who said he was “a bit concerned” about the ticketing resolution. What appeared to be at issue was the township's goal to issue a certain number of tickets. The police equipment, which includes state-of-the-art video cameras…
Judge sentences former Rutgers student to 30 days, and a $10,000 fine.
Dharun Ravi was sentenced to 30 days in the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, 300 hours of community service, three years probation and a $10,000 fine by a Superior Court judge in New Brunswick on Monday. Ravi, 20, remained emotionless during the sentencing, his hand clasped to his mouth, while Superior Court Judge Glenn Berman explained the sentencing. The fine is to be paid to a state-sanctioned organization that assists victims of bias crimes, Berman said. Ravi must also attend counseling programs that address cyber bullying and alternative lifestyles, Berman said. Both Ravi's attorneys and the state plan to appeal the sentence, and have 10 days to do so. Earlier this month, the prosecution made a request for a maximum prison …
Fast service and good food make this Bloomfield Avenue restaurant a winner.
Before even mentioning the food, there is a lot to like about Spice II at 399 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair. In general, you can always find a table here. In addition, you can usually nab a parking spot on the street along this stretch of Bloomfield, at least in the middle of the day. Finally, the service is friendly and fast. (And, according to friends, this comes in handy when one wants to enjoy a quick dinner before seeing a show at the Wellmont, which is right across the street.) At first, though, the fact the place was empty at 12:30 p.m. raised a red flag. But the food was superb. Watched over by portraits of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyade and Queen Sirikit, my friends and I enjoyed a nice array of Thai lunch dishes, priced at …

Golda Och Academy's lower campus officially broke ground on their $7 million expansion and renovation project Thursday during a special ceremony. The Wilf Lower School Campus Renovation Project was named after Jane and Mark Wilf, who contributed a $2 million lead capital gift for the Lower School renovation. “I think for myself and for our family, we realize the importance of Jewish education to the future of the Jewish community and the Jewish people,” said Mark Wilf. “This new building will provide the classroom space and facilities so that the children here can maximize their education in terms of Jewish values and a love of Israel.” The current building, which houses students from Pre-K to fifth grade, will have newly refurbished …

A doctor from Franklin Lakes admitted in federal court Friday that he took cash payments in exchange for patient referrals, the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey said in a release. Dov Rand, 47, who practices in West Orange, pleaded guilty to one county of violating the federal healthcare anti-kickback statute, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said. Rand and 12 other New Jersey doctors were arrested in December and charged with accepting envelopes of cash from Orange Community MRI, a diagnostic facility in Orange, according to the release. County Correction Center (jail) has a nice sounding name, but it is not a nice place. There are some serious offenders waiting for court dates, there are all sorts of hardened crimmals in County. All of the mean, horrible things that happen on the silver screen, shown in federal prisons; can happen in county too. This is New Jersey, not Alaska, County Jail is the real-deal. 30 days for a college …   more ›
