The Weekend: Hot Picks in Some Cool Places

There's a lot on tap and these events have one thing in common: air-conditioning.

Summer has made its arrival known with a vicious heat wave, so for those who are not escaping to the beach, Patch has compiled a list of entertainments for the weekend that will be blissfully air-conditioned. From a luau to a charity art auction, the following events are indoors, so cool off and enjoy!

This fundraiser for Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center offers not only tons of comic books and graphic novels for sale, but a lecture series and writers and artists as special guests.  Click the link for a list of lecturers and guests. Free; Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; West Orange

Got a story to share?  Come throw your name in the hat at the Burgdorff this Friday night and if your name is pulled, gather your wits and step up on stage to deliver your best 5-minute story.  If the judges love you most, you win!  If you name is not chosen, just sit back a listen to some fabulous writing and enjoy a beer!  $5; Friday at 8 p.m.; Maplewood

The Young Curators Program is a seven month intensive program for high school juniors and seniors getting into the business of curating.  The evidence of their skills will be on display in the Pierro Gallery at from June 22nd through June 30th.  Meet the young curators at the opening reception when they unveil the works of local artists from the metropolitan area, including South Orange and Maplewood, that they have hand-selected for the exhibit. Free; Friday 6 to 8 p.m.; South Orange

Do not miss your last chance to see Once on This Island at the this weekend.  Bring on summer with this musical set in the Carribbean, with villagers calming a small girl with the tale of a peasant girl falling in love with a rich young man, and what the island gods have to say about it. $32 to $87; Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 1:30 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 and 7 p.m.; Millburn
