St. Barnabas Hospital Offers Tips To Stay Safe During Heat Wave

St. Barnabas Medical Center's Dr. Neena Gupta offers tips for staying safe during the heat wave.

As the heat index continues reach into the 100s this week, St. Barnabas Medical Center is reminding people to stay aware and protect themselves and others from the heat.

The local hospital has seen an uptick in people experiencing heat-related injuries since the heat wave began, said Dr. Neena Gupta. Gupta said the heat is particularly affecting the elderly. 

Symptoms related to dehydration, heat exhaustion and other heat-related injuries include:

  • Becoming weak
  • Feeling cold and clammy
  • Having a dry mouth
  • Feeling dizzy or faint
  • Passing out (in extreme cases)

When it comes to safety tips, Gupta suggested keeping it simple:

  • Stay hydrated and drink fluids throughout the day
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing
  • Minimize physical activity
  • Stay inside during the hottest part of the day

Gupta added that people should keep an eye on their elderly neighbors. If someone you know doesn’t have air conditioning, be a good neighbor and invite him or her into your home.

And Gupta said do not forget about your pets in the heat. “Make sure [your pets] stay very hydrated, make sure you offer them lots of water … and do not keep elderly folk, children or pets in cars.”
