Hazel Students Spread Holiday Cheer at Nursng Home

Students sing, play games and talk to residents before the holidays.

Submitted by Amy Simon

Fourth grade students from Hazel Avenue School visited Canterbury Nursing Home in West Orange on Dec. 12.

The visit is an annual trip for Mrs. Hochheiser, a music teacher at Hazel. Each year she brings fourth grade students to the nursing home to brighten the day for the residents.

Under the leadership of Hochheiser, the students sang holiday songs to bring cheer to the residents of the home.  After singing several holiday classics, the children interacted with them.  Some children made Rainbow Loom bracelets for the ladies who lived there while others challenged the residents to games such as Checkers, Connect Four and Mancala.  Other children read stories and shared pictures.

“This was the best trip ever!”  exclaimed student Alexa DeRonde upon returning from the trip.

All the children expressed their feelings of gratitude in the realization that giving to the seniors was such a fulfilling experience.
