West Orange Tax Collector Offers Insight into 3rd Quarter Tax Bills

The town tax collector visited the Town Council to explain how tax amounts are determined.

West Orange residents with questions about the third quarter tax bills recently mailed to residents can find answers from Tax Collector Joanne Gagliardo. Gagliardo offered information on the bills at Tuesday's Town Council meeting, The Alternative Press reported.

Since the 2013 municipal budget is not yet certified, what taxpayers see on the third quarter bill is only an estimate, Gagliardo said at the meeting. Tax increases for this year appear on the third and fourth quarter bills, and is determined by subtracting the 2012 tax amount, paid in the first and second quarters, from the 2013 amount and dividing third and fourth quarter taxes by two. As for the amount of the third quarter estimated payment, the tax collector said it is determined by using the municipal tax rate, the school budget amount and the county tax rate, the article said.

Residents who need information about their bills were encouraged by Gagliardo to contact her via email or to take a look at the town website.
