Tonight: Township Council Will Discuss Edison Redevelopment

Meeting at 7 p.m. will take place at Edison School

The much-anticipated township council meeting to discuss the Edison redevelopment project on Main Street will take place tonight.

The council will vote on two ordinances and a resolution to approve the finances and infrastructure for Phase I of the project.

Phase I of the project calls for 333 luxury apartment units for-rent and 18,500 square feet of retail space in the Edison battery building. It will also include a 635-space parking garage and a Jitney service to both the Orange and South Orange New Jersey Transit train stations.

Should the resolution to approve be voted down, the project will not move forward.

Prism Capital Partners, LLC, will also be present at the meeting to answer questions from the public and the township council.

The meeting will take place at Thomas A. Edison Central Six School on 75 William Street at 7 p.m.

Continue to check Patch for more information on the meeting.

I will remind all that as far back as 1983 I have been stating that " As Main Street goes.........................so will West Orange!" If we want West Orange to prosper and grow, we need a vibrant Downtown and this re-development is long overdue and much needed to make this happen. At the same time I would hope that the developer would show the Township leadership that they will hold up their end by at the very least clean up the site, fix the construction barrier. If the parking garage components are complete and in the pre-caster's yard (eastern PA) they should move w/the foundation and erect the Garage. Construction activity on this site would provide jobs (many for West Orange residents) and activity on this site is sure to be the spark for other downtown re-development and renovation of small business along the corridor.

I have no doubt that, upon approval, Prism will mobilize men and equipment and quickly proceed to renovate this moribund property. Let's keep in mind that, without a penny's income from the parcel, they've been paying a hefty property tax bill for years.

As I'm not all that familiar with the town goverment, who actually does the voting on this project? Is it just the town council? Do residents get a vote?

Prisim owns the land they can do what they want with it. I hope they do something nice but I don't want to extend public financing for them to do it. I hope our town council comes up with a market based solution to the land letting the real estate market work.

Why the hell should the public fund this disaster? Have the taxpayers of W/O not been screwed enough? DO not put the taxpayers of W/O on the hook for this mess. It stinks of corruption and it is just plain wrong.
