New Jitney Buses Coming to West Orange Costing $240K

The four new shuttles are expected in the streets in January 2014 with no cost to the taxpayers.

Four new jitney buses are coming to West Orange with a total price tag just over $240,000, the township announced Wednesday.

With the West Orange Township Council recently awarding Wolfington Body Company Inc. a contract for purchase, the new shuttle buses are expected to hit the roads in January 2014 with no cost to taxpayers.

“Our goal is to make living in town as easy as possible and we are happy to provide this convenient, free service to our residents," said West Orange Mayor Robert D. Parisi.

The $240,674 funding for the four shuttle buses will come from reappropriating existing capital. There will be no increase in net debt for Township taxpayers.

According to the township, the new busses with provide transport for residents to two train stations. The township also offers senior and handicapped transport.

Parisi added, "While train commuters cite the jitneys as one of the major reasons they chose to live in West Orange, this service is also heavily relied upon by our senior citizen and handicapped residents to help with their transportation needs.”
