McCartney Sworn in as Council President

Councilwoman Susan McCartney takes oath of office as council president Monday morning.

Councilwoman Susan McCartney was sworn in as West Orange Council President Monday morning.

McCartney is the longest-serving person on the council, having been elected to three terms starting in 2002.  She has served as council president three times.

“She will dig into any issue she wants to work on with the veracity of an animal,” Mayor Robert Parisi said. "Sue approaches any issue as if she can change the world."

McCartney laughed and said, “I will continue to work to change the world and at the least West Orange.”

She thanked those who gathered in Town Hall at 10:30 a.m. Monday and promised to try to bring the community together as council president.

“The past week has been really difficult,” McCartney said, referring to last week’s township council meeting. “That can’t happen again.”

She highlighted her achievements with the energy commission and the chamber of commerce.

Parisi said the township has had respect for McCartney for a long time and hopes she will run for office again.

“I ask for your continued support,” McCartney said.

Outgoing council president Victor Cirilo was on hand to pass on the president's gavel to McCartney.

“It’s been a pleasure serving with Susan,” Cirilo said.

McCartney responded, “I will use it sparingly.”
