Pair Accused of Armed Robbery Near Middle School

The 14th armed robbery this year in West Orange occurred in front of Edison Middle School Tuesday afternoon.

West Orange police have charged two juveniles from Orange in the armed robbery in broad daylight Tuesday, authorities said.

According to Capt. John Buoye, the two youths—16 and 17 years olds—pulled a gun on a 19-year-old West Orange resident in front of Edison Middle School just after 5 p.m.

The pair went through the resident's pockets, stealing cash and his iPhone and fled on Franklin Street, Buoye said.

According to the report, the resident started to walk home when he saw a friend and contacted police.

West Orange police then spotted three people near Front Street who matched the description of the robbers, Buoye said.

When police tried to questions them, they took off, according to the report. Police caught up with a 16-year-old from Orange and Shaquille Phelps, 19, of West Orange, and arrested pair.

The third was tracked down the 17-year-old and taken into custody at his home in Orange, Buoye said.

The 16 and 17-year-old were charged with the armed robbery. Phelps was charged with obstruction of administration law.

*It was originally reported the robbery occurred in Colgate Park.
