Resident Captures Break-In on Surveillance Camera

Video shows two men allegedly breaking into car on Old Indian Road in West Orange

Two men were caught in the act by a West Orange resident's surveillance camera when they broke into his vehicle on Old Indian Road.

The footage shows an unknown car pulling into Barry Geltzeiler's home shortly after 7 a.m. on Aug. 3. In a matter of minutes two men ransacked his vehicle but left empty handed and fled in their car.

Police confirmed the incident but said they were not able to identify the men from the footage. They said the case remains under investigation.

Geltzeiler said "the police did all they could and were very helpful" and he hopes the community can help identify the individuals.

Last Wednesday morning, Geltzeiler said he went out for the morning paper around 7:30 a.m. and found the windows of his 2003 Infinity FX45 rolled down and the handle on driver's seat door damaged — at least $1,000 worth of damages, he said.

He said he was so shocked by the incident that he forgot his house came fully equipped with surveillance cameras when they moved in 14 months ago. "I didn't realize it until my wife pointed it out," he said.

Geltzeiler reviewed hours of footage expecting to see the doors to his Infinity swing forcibly open in the middle of the night. But he was surprised to learn that the men arrived at his home in the morning.

"I saw the sun rise and the newspaper get delivered," he said, when he spotted an unknown car pull up to his driveway shortly after 7 a.m. on the surveillance tapes.

Father of two girls, aged 14 and 17, Geltzeiler said he felt violated by the incident but was grateful nothing happened to his family, who were all home at during the break-in. "My daughter leaves for work right at that time," he said. "Who knows what could have happened."
