Police: Lacey Woman Left Dog to Die

A Forked River woman was charged with animal cruelty after allegedly leaving a dog to die in her residence

A Forked River woman was charged with animal cruelty after allegedly leaving a dog to die in her residence, police said.

Megan Otte, 21, was arrested after Lacey Township police officers responded to a Pensacola Road address to investigate a suspicious odor, police said.

Officer Paul Sullivan discovered a deceased dog located inside a dog crate at the home. The mixed breed dog, named Ruger, had been dead for approximately one month.

An investigation by Sullivan and Officer Paul Schlossbach of New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals found that Otte, the homeowner, moved from the residence and left Ruger alive in the cage. Sometime after she moved, the dog died, police said.

Otte was charged with animal cruelty and abandonment. She was transported to the Ocean County Jail with bail set at $7,500.

Lacey Township Animal Control Officer Michael San Juan also assisted at the scene.

Just looked on her facebook page, out of curiosity. Apparently she's a Certified Nursing Assistant at a local rehab center. SERIOUSLY? She is supposed to take care of humans? To me, my dogs are my family and they might as well lock her up and throw away the key. Disgusting.

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL How can a human being think this is a solution to anything? There are shelters. Nothing bad that happens to her will ever be enough to right this wrong....HORRIBLE. My heart aches for what that innocent animal went through. Hope she does not reproduce.

This is absolutley a very sad story. My heart breaks for this poor dog. How can anyone treat a animal this badly. I love dogs!!!! There is no excuse for this women to do what she did to this poor dog. I just hope she doesn't treat her patients like she treated this poor HELPLESS dog. SHAME ON YOU MEGAN OTTE

That is the amount of the bail, not the fine. It is sad to say that punishment is never that tough when they are convicted. Look at Michael Vick. Consider this, EVERY serial killer in the United States started out abusing or killing animals, EVERY ONE OF THEM !!!

Megan Otte: You should be sentenced to hell on earth! They should throw you in jail with the other scum of the earth-- the murderers, rapists, drug dealers, thieves and folks just like you.
