Police Blotter

The West Orange Police Department has released the following report of incidents to which its officers responded to during the previous weeks. All persons charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. 

Assault

• 247 Main St., May 29, 1:06 a.m.: Dejanne Brewer, 21, of Hoboken, was arrested and charged with assault after police observed her exit a vehicle and strike a victim. The victim refused medical attention. 

Brewer was transported to headquarters and charged, according to reports.

• Colgate Park, 60 Cheery St., May 30, 8:11 p.m.: A five-year-old girl, reportedly unsupervised, was harassing the two-year-old daughter of the reporting person. After the reporting person asked the five-year-old to stop, she fled the park.

Later, someone entered the park -- police reports do not clearly identify the person -- with four other individuals who were engaged in a verbal argument which escalated into a physical assault. Someone was struck in the face with a closed fist, at which time the four individuals fled the park. 

The West Orange First Aid Squad responded to the scene to provide medical attention, but the victim refused it. The victim was later treated at Overlook Hospital in Summit for a broken nose, according to reports. 

Burglary and/or theft

• Gregory Avenue, May 29, 12:57 p.m.: The victim reported to headquarters to report that she has recently noticed articles of clothing missing from her room. The missing articles of clothing included more than $590 worth of jeans. 

The reporting person stated she suspected her 16-year-old niece of the theft, according to reports. 

• 46 High St., May 30, 7:20 a.m.: A vehicle was stolen from the aforementioned address while it was parked on the street in front of a residence, according to reports. 

• Edgewood Avenue, May 30, 10:37 p.m.: A residence was broken into and ransacked, and approximately $2,000 worth of jewelry and assorted coins were stolen. 

Someone forced open the front door of the residence, damaging the lock and door. The jewelry and coins reported missing were taken from the master bedroom. Two pillow cases were reportedly taken and suspected to be used when removing the jewelry and coins. 

A canvass of the neighborhood revealed that a silver or grey SUV, possibly a Chevy Traverse, with a Michigan registration was left running and unoccupied in the victim’s driveway during the time of the incident, according to reports.  

• Rock Spring Country Club, 100 Rock Spring Road, June 2, 6:37 p.m.: A vehicle was discovered missing while it was left in the country club’s parking lot unlocked and with the keys in the center console, according to re•ports. 

Criminal mischief

• Valley Road, June 2, 7:19 p.m.: A vehicle’s rear-passenger window was smashed out in the area of 368 Valley Road. The damage caused approximately $200 worth of repairs, according to reports.

• Michelle and Tompkins streets, June 3, 12:39 a.m.: Kyle Julius Copeland, 20, of Newark, was arrested by police as he was fleeing from a parked vehicle whose front windshield and rear drivers-window was smashed out. 

The vehicle’s owner was at the scene and stated he had become involved in a verbal argument with Copeland which escalated and ended with Copeland breaking the windows of the vehicle with a metal pole. Copeland was taken into custody and transported to headquarters. The vehicle’s owner would not cooperate any further with police, and refused to provide a statement regarding the incident, according to reports. 

Drugs

• Lindsley Avenue, June 3, 6:34 p.m.: Liana Lynn Luna, 19, of West Orange, was arrested and charged with possessing drug paraphernalia. 

Police responded to the scene of a backyard where two juveniles and Luna were reportedly smoking marijuana. When police arrived, they detected the odor of marijuana, but a search of the suspects and area revealed only four empty plastic baggies and four empty cigar wrappers. 

All three were transported to headquarters and processed, according to reports. 

Ordinance violation

• Mitchell Street, May 31, 8:24 p.m.: Michael D. Carruthers, 31, of Memphis, Tenn., was issued a summons for soliciting without a permit in the area of Mitchell Street and Glen Avenue. 

Residents informed police that Carruthers would become irate and belligerent when they would decline to purchase the magazines he was trying to sell. 

Carruthers was carrying a binder from the company Go 4more 2Inc., out of Michigan City, Ind. Police noted that Carruthers was very uninformative and somewhat difficult to deal with when it came to providing information about the company he was working for, according to reports.  

Police information

• Riggs Place, June 2, 7:20 p.m.: A 12-year-old juvenile was reportedly shot with a pellet gun. The juvenile stated to police that he was shot by his friend, approximately 11 years old, after the two began arguing over a notebook. When the victim attempted to leave, he was allegedly shot in the back with a BB from the pellet gun. 

Police secured the pellet gun and transported one of the juveniles to headquarters because no guardian was available. The juvenile was released from headquarters to a guardian, according to reports. 

Theft

• TD Bank, 425 Pleasant Valley Way, May 29, 9:56 a.m.: A bank teller was accused of pulling a “slight of hand” and taking $200 from someone making a deposit at the bank. 

According to the victim, he approached the deposit window and the teller at the bank with, what he believed, was $1,500 in cash. When the teller counted the money twice in front of the victim, it only came to $1,300, according to reports.
