Livingston Teen's Killing Outside West Orange Apartment Shocks Community

Northfield Avenue shooting appears to be a targeted attack, prosecutor says.

A Livingston man was found shot to death outside a Northfield Avenue apartment building early Thursday morning.

Brendan Tevlin, 19, was killed from an apparent gunshot wound at about midnight, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

Authorities responded to the area of Walker Road and Northfield Avenue at about midnight after receiving a report of shots fired, the prosecutor's office said.

A preliminary investigation indicated Tevlin was targeted in the shooting, the prosecutor's office said.

The teen's body was discovered inside an SUV in the 200 block of Northfield Avenue, according to WPIX.com.

Tevlin, a Seton Hall Prep grad who just finished his freshman year at the University of Richmond, was called a "good kid" who had "no enemies," a family friend told The Star-Ledger.

According to the report, Tevlin texted his mother Wednesday night, saying he was on his way home after being out at a friend's house. The family has no indication why he was targeted, the report said.

“We’re literally just reeling in this tragedy,” the family spokeswoman told the Ledger.

A Mass was held Thursday at Seton Hall Prep to celebrate Tevlin's life. West Orange Mayor Parisi, who is friends with the Tevlin family, said the 19-year-old was an "impressive young man with a lot to offer the world," according to The Alternative Press.

"It's hard to put into words how horrible I feel today, or how this entire community grieves for what happened," according to The Alternative Press.
