Man Charged in Alleged Carjacking, High-Speed Chase

Charles Bracy, 24, of Orange, was charged with carjacking, eluding, aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

A 24-year-old Orange man has been charged in the carjacking in Essex Green last week that turned into a high-speed chase injuring four West Orange officers, authorities said Friday.

Charles Bracy was charged with carjacking, eluding, aggravated assault and more than four charges for possession of a weapon, Sgt. David Naimaister. His charges were reported earlier as pending.

According to police, Bracy was driving the stolen Infiniti, which was carjacked from Orange on Aug. 8, that hit multiple cop cars in the failed getaway.

When police arrested Bracy, officers found a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the car, Jessica Glicker, a spokeswoman for the township, said.

Bracy and a few others pulled up in the stolen Infiniti, carjacked a BMW at gunpoint from the Essex Green Shopping Center in West Orange and drove off in both vehicles at approximately 1 p.m. on Aug. 7.

Police pursued the cars during which the Infiniti ran into two West Orange police vehicles on Mount Pleasant Avenue, injuring the West Orange cops.

The BMW and its occupants got away and remain at-large, Glicker said Friday.

we need more foot cops and less eating jelly donuts while babysitting construction sites and stop and frisk will help a lot. and while we are at it maybe some serious hard core no nonsense tactics like wiping out the gangs in town

Lindsay and Tom well said.. Unfortunately, these judges and others that have never being in Law enforcement and don't know left from right are the instigators to stop and frisk. I wonder if someone go and attack one of those what they are going to ask the Police for.. YOU DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO STOP THE CRIMINAL WITH A GUN.. WELL... I HAVE AN ANSWER FOR THOSE. IT IS YOUR FAULT THAT WE HAVE MANY CRIMINALS DOING WHATEVER THEY WANT WITHOUT THE STOP AND FRISK.... LEARN A LESSON PEOPLE.... EDUCATE YOURSELF AND LOOK AROUND WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OUR TOWN OF WO... ESSEX GREEN, PLEASANTDALE AREA.. GO AND ASK FOR THE CRIME COMMITTED IN YOUR AREA AT THE TOWN CLERK AND YOU WILL BE SURPRISE HOW MUCH IS HIDDEN THAT WE AS RESIDENTS DON'T KNOW. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE..

I have nothing against stop and frisk, but how would that have prevented this crime?

Great, I'm glad everyone loves having thier rights (Fourth Amendment) taken away from them and flushed down the drain. Keep up the good work so we can have a police state...

i have been stopped and frisked twice in NYC that did not bother me in the least. if you have something to hide than you might have a problem with it.

....hey badful, I don't want my 4th ammendment taken away, but we need to put an end to this cat and mouse game. I drive a BMW and it has to stay in my driveway because some low class human being from next town, could potentially pull out a gun and hurt a family member. We can't count on our police force to do everything and I'm sure they are doing the best they can, the question is what else can we do as a community to diminish the risk.

...I'm just wondering if there could be some sort of a task force between WO Police, Orange Police, sheriffs' dept, state police, etc. to somehow decrease the amount of carjacking in our area, specifically, Essex green shopping areas.......just wondering..

Stop and frisk wouldn't solve anything in the short term -- look at the statistics from NYC, it was nearly useless -- and in the long term, it would cost us millions -- instituting a policy that was JUST FOUND unconstitutional by a federal judge. (Plus, I have to assume: if you catch someone with an illegal gun on them in an unconstitutional stop & frisk search, the gun and the arrest will be tossed. Not only will the township be sued, but it'll be (successfully) sued BY THE VERY CRIMINAL WE TRIED TO ARREST.) Move on, Tom; it's not going to happen. Even if you 100% believe it would work -- which I don't -- it still can't happen. Let it go. (Plus: while some of our street crime, especially along the Orange border, seems to involve suspects solely on foot, this sort of carjacking doesn't. Stop & frisk doesn't actually work if the armed suspects start off IN A CAR.) What IS legal, and what SHOULD work, is a combination of massive, massive hyper-enforcement of every single NJ motor vehicle law and more foot/bike patrol in areas with problems. If you do 26 in a 25, or you change lanes without a signal, or your radio is too loud, or your license plate obscured by a little dirt, you need to be pulled over, and if there's anything about you that the cop doesn't like, you get the summons, not the warning. If the bike or foot cop rolling past you smells weed, and you know he will, it's an arrest for CDS. It doesn't take long to build up a reputation for being a town you don't want to screw around in because your ill-maintained car or your crappy driving will get you a ticket. Easier to just stay on 280 for a couple more exits and go steal a car out of another town.

my idea i think is still best. put our chubby ride in a car cop on beat patrols in the worst areas of the town. with a visual presence on the streets that might keep the ghetto scum back where they belong. also we need to weed out the gang element out of the schools.and if you think there are no bangers in the schools you are greatly mistaken. both the crips and bloods are a factor in the orange west orange area and this needs to be addressed also.Because the thug wanted for 1 of these armed robberies is from west orange as i'm sure others are so it is not just a out of town invasion on our hands. we need to come down hard on crime and those involved

Lets be honest I find it hard to believe that most people would not agree that had an aggressive STOP and FRISK program been in place these people may have been picked up on previous stops that would have prevented the crimes
hugh lindsay August 18, 2013 at 10:18 AM
i agree 100% and would cut down the drug trade in some degree

I love when people say having a stop and frisk would take away their rights (Fourth Amendment or whatever). Doesn't it also violate your rights when someone sticks a gun in your face or steals your property?
badbul August 18, 2013 at 05:27 PM
Tom G, it isn't only some people fighting for our rights, it's also the ACLU fighting for them.
