Doctor Sentenced for Kickback Scheme

West Orange physician Dov Rand of Franklin Lakes was sentenced to five months in prison, five months of home detention and fined $30,000 on Wednesday.

A West Orange doctor who took cash payments in exchange for patient referrals was sentenced Wednesday to five months in prison and five months of home detention, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.

Dov Rand, 48, of Franklin Lakes, received the sentence before U.S. District Judge Claire C. Cecchi in federal court in Newark.

In addition to his prison term, Rand was sentenced to two years of supervised release and fined $30,000, the U.S. Attorney's office announced in a release.

According to court testimony, Orange Community MRI paid Rand kickbacks for each Medicare or Medicaid beneficiary MRI or CAT Scan referred since at least 2010, officials said. 

Rand and 12 other New Jersey doctors were arrested in December and charged with accepting envelopes of cash from Orange Community MRI, a diagnostic facility in Orange, according to the release.

Rand pled guilty on May 18, 2012.
