Marouso Chiovaro, 36, of West Orange was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 1:29 p.m.

A two-car collision on Northfield Avenue in West Orange left one person dead Tuesday afternoon, officials with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

Marouso Chiovaro, 36, of West Orange was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 1:29 p.m., according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.

Shortly before 1 p.m.,  a blue Toyota Camry traveling east bound on Northfield Avenue in the area of Highwood Road crossed over into the west bound lanes of traffic and was struck by a red Honda Pilot, said Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman with the prosecutor's office.

She said Chiovaro was the driver of the Camry. The driver of the Honda was transported to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash caused major traffic delays in the area, with Northfield Avenue closed off in both directions between Gregory and Prospect Avenues hours after the incident.

West Orange officials and members of the Essex County Prosecutor's Office dotted the scene Tuesday on Northfield Avenue.

The red sports utility vehicle was propped up on a tow truck with visible damage to the front. On the other side of Northfield Avenue, a blue sedan was severely crushed.

The school district sent out a call to all district parents around 2 p.m. informing them an accident near Gregory could cause delays in the afternoon bus schedule. Gregory Principal Michele Thompson said she would keep students in the cafeteria once school let out if the buses were not there to pick up the kids.

A resident who lives in the area said she heard the crash from her home off Northfield Avenue. "I heard one car hitting another car," she said. The resident, who did not give her name, said she hears crashes all the time from her home and while this incident "didn't sound worse than normal," she was concerned when she saw six police cars whiz by her.

The woman said accidents happen all the time on the street especially in the winter and when it rains. "The roads get wet and people don't realize how slippery it gets," she said. "They fly down and they can't stop."

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced Tuesday night that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit and the West Orange Police are investigating the fatal motor vehicle crash.

A family lost someone today....say a prayer that they will get through this. There will be another time and place to get on your soap box about speeding, if that was even the case.

Yes, I knew the person who was killed today and even her family doesn't have the details yet. Please, respect the family. 3 kids...2 VERY young are now without a mother. My heart hurts for this family and I pray for all of them!

The details are not important. What is important is that there is a family with a missing piece of their heart. Our thought should be on helping the family in anyway available. It is heart breaking to me that people forget about what is important in times like this, and spend so much wasted time concentrating on what is not, and is also nobodys business other than the families. My thoughts and prayers are with the family

My heart goes out to the family as well, very sad. But the reality is, the cause of this incident is important in order to get a message out there to the public. No matter what the cause (speeding, texting, auto malfunction, avoiding wild animals, etc.) the public should be aware. Each bad circumstances can & should be used for good. What many people don't realize (I'm speaking in general, not about the deceased mother) is the responsibility they take on when they get behind the wheel of a car!! No matter if this incident was the woman's fault or not, it did involve another vehicle which sent that person to the hospital with no 'life-threatening' injuries. It's had an impact on that person's life and her family as well. Our thoughts should be with all the families and a message should be sent out for people to not take things for granted and/or people for granted. We are here one day & gone the next.

Marouso worked in our customer service department. I work on the west coast and have never met her but she was always a pleasure to deal with on the phone. We have talked often over the years solving customer issues. I am very sad to hear about her passing. My prayers are with her family and friends. This is a huge loss.

The family has so much to deal with right now so we can only wish them peace at this time and pray they make it through this difficult time. May god watch over her family, especially now and may she rest in peace. Lets pray for everyone involved.

My condolences go out the children and the family of this woman. It is true as some one stated in the article, people do speed up and down Northfield ave when it snows and rains not realizing how slippery the road becomes. There are car accidents all of the time, maybe the county or the township could put barrier like on south orange ave to stop the cars from going from one side to another.

This is a very sad news. I knew her and my heart goes out to her 3 children. May God give her kids and family all the strength to cope with this tragedy. My condolences to her family. RIP :(
