“Traditionally science has always been an under represented field for people of color,” said STEM coordinator, WOAHO Black History Month committee member, Linda Bullock. “Since Edison Middle School is a central 6th grade it has all the district’s students in one location at an early developmental age. We thought introducing them to the idea of careers in science and technology now would spark an early interest.”

Edison Middle School administrators and science staff have assisted the WOAHO with developing and implementing the program that was well received by students and parents in the 20112- 2013 school year.

“People of color have made many contributions in the world of science, math and engineering in the past. Now with all of the new technology available we want students to think about what you can do beyond traditional career ideas. There are opportunities out there that our students of all cultural backgrounds have never even dreamed of,” said Ms. Bullock.

“Edison Middle School is grateful and honored to have the members of the West Orange African Heritage Organization coordinate this valuable program,” said Assistant Principal Steven Melendez. “We value the participation of our parents and community in bringing real world application examples of our core curriculum studies to our classrooms.”

The STEM program is part of the West Orange African Heritage Organization’s American Black History Month Series, the ABHM committee is chaired by Joan Reeves.
