Visions For Vacancies: What Should Move To 440 Main Street?

Since Gaffer's Pub moved it's up to you to suggest what business should move in! Let us know in the comments section.

Let's call this a modern spin on community planning — Patch's version of a charette, a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table.

In an occasional column, we'll present a new vacant space and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use. Forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules, and all the other zoning jargon that puts people most to sleep.

We launch this occasional feature by focusing on the now vacant space at 440 Main Street.

The space is an 1,900-square-foot store front in a great location near the intersection of Main Street, Eagle Rock Avenue and Harrison Avenue. It used to be a bar, Gaffer's Pub but it moved across the street then closed.

So with a few of bars, restaurants and shops in West Orange, now it's up to you to suggest what business should move in. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community?

Let us know in the comments section below! Know of a vacant space/building we should highlight? Email craig.mccarthy@patch.com

A children's store or activity would be awesome.

It's a bad location. Parking is a pain in that area. Out of curiosity, does anyone know if that Japanese fusion restaurant across the street is still open.

I wish our Main St could be more like Westfield's... I say bring in a high quality vendor & some nice upscale condos or townhomes in the old Edison buildings... we are in a great location & should treat it as such. West Orange needs to re-vamp its image!

Where is Gaffers now? - i'm glad Slate is gone..i heard nothing but bad reviews about it, but heard that Gaffer's moved into that space.(?)

love that idea of a bakery or maybe a fozen yogurt place?
Suzanne February 22, 2013 at 03:23 PM
Coffee shop, maybe like Cafe Eclectic in Montclair where there are musical acts (singers, guitar players) with table and comfey couches. Possibly someplace for breakfast, we are limited in that area in West Orange.

An upscale Authentic Spanish restaurant :)

Slate, the Japanese fusion restaraunt partnered with Gaffers, closed it down and moved it to Slate because of high rent and then the partnership dissolved from what I heard. Slate had high security for black functions and none for anybody else which helped to drive out their main customers. They don't even turn on the heat in that place now. Nice looking place but poorly managed. The house DJ sucks, the auto play music sucks. The bartenders don't do buy backs which was another complaint for regulars. The list goes on. I can't get one free drink after spending $50 or more on a regular basis. $300 in onenight doesn't even warrant a free beer for you. It's the little things that make a big difference. I would never attempt to do a prty there again.

To M. Slate isn't gone......yet! I doubt that they last through this coming summer though. They need to cater to the youth and Gaffers needs to reopen after remodeling. I heard that place is a mess behind the scenes. The landlord is a greedy slum lord and now he isn't making any money on that spot. Hmmmmmm. Now he'll have to fix it up and lower the rent before anybody occupies that corn hole!

Portuguese/Spanish restaurant like Iberia or Spain's in Newark. Lobster and Sangria!!!!!!!

I like the idea of a Spanish retaurant for what used to be called "Restaurant row," but I live nearby and I always wanted a bakery so that I could stop by and pick up some pastries on Sunday morning...dreams, just dreams....

I know I'll get blasted for this, but how about a place like Quizno's or Chipotle? I know people like to say they want "mom and pop" businesses, but honestly, this isn't 1952 anymore. The independently owned businesses aren't surviving on Main St. anymore.
Sylvia February 23, 2013 at 04:24 AM
We need few businesses on Main and Valley: Starbucks, Cups Frozen Yogurt, Messy Artist for children, Trader Joe's, some great cupcake place, juice bar, and few small but great restaurants like some amazing thai food, Indian food and so on. We need all of those businesses at once and then we will have great Valley or downtown area..... You want to see changes, bring some business that will attract many at the same time...

The landlord should stop being so stubborn and bring Scott and Keith back to 440 Main Street. Some rent is better than no rent and we in West Orange miss the fantastic food and awesome atmosphere . . .

You all don't know what your talkin about ! What west orange needs is a solid sports bar. A shot an beer joint ! Video games pool tables and dart boards. The town is going to shit ! We aren't Montclair. We aren't Hoboken. A simple sports bar is necessary. Egans is horrible and charges to much. Slate Is incosistant . Forget about a Restraunt. If someone wants to go to dinner they certainly arent going to go out in west orange for it. We need a nice hang out with bright lighting and a fun atmosphere. You all need to get a clue

West orange gets many visitors from all over the country and world to the Thomas Edison National Park How about a Tourist Center. A place where you could get information on things to do in area Thomas Edison tours,Statue of liberty,NYC,Jersey city,Hoboken,House tours, Turtleback zoo, Bus tours, ghost tours... our area is So Rich In History I think there is a great opportunity to capitalize on tourists that visit Thomas Edison's factory and home, and then are left no Guidence on what to do in the area. I think there is the potential of multi day visit to West Orange

An all you can eat Chinese buffet or a Buffalo Wild Wings would be great there
Sylvia February 23, 2013 at 05:36 PM
@Dj shamis. Hey who is saying that sports bar is not a good idea dude?! I think you need to get a clue and understand that we need more than sports bar. And yes we can be Hoboken or Westfield or some other town that offers dinning, sports bars and other fan activities at the same time.... I'm tired of going to eat in Maplewood...... So think about everyone, not just about yourself Dj shamis and yes you idea is also fan and great my husband would love it!
