Liberty Students Recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Students raised money and awareness, and formed a human pink ribbon at school.

Liberty Middle School students in West Orange formed a human Breast Cancer Ribbon as part of an activity on "Pink & Denim" day to recognize breast cancer awareness.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a group of students raised money and made a visible gesture about their desire to wipe out all cancers, according to Jeanine Genauer, spokeswoman for the West Orange schools.

Student council members also helped collect one dollar donations for the fight for the cure, Genauer said.

Krystal McGruder, a seventh grade student and student council member, said the students worked hard during their free time to help the cause, "I raised money for a good cause which will help people in need. During lunch, we got a lot of donations from both boys and girls. Lots of boys and girls wore pink and denim on that Friday. It was good that everyone showed support."

Students could fill out a pink ribbon card recognizing individuals in their quest to conquer breast cancer, she said. More than $215 in contributions were collected to support breast cancer research, Genauer said.

Stephanie Nesbitt, an eighth grade Liberty guidance counselor and event organizer, said the effort reflects the school's students and staff’s commitment to the cause.

"It's a great feeling to come together as a school for a worthy cause," Nesbitt said. "The students worked really hard to raise both awareness and money.  Liberty Middle School is a strong community of passionate learners with a social conscience."

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) is a collaboration of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease, and provide greater access to services, according to its website.
