What's Happening in West Orange Synagogues?

This week's focus returns to Congregation Ahawas Achim B'na Jacob & David.

As the weather begins to cool down, we are feverishly preparing for the High Holidays. Our summer was extremely busy and our members enjoyed all of our exciting and educational programs here at Congregation Ahawas Achim B’nai Jacob & David (AABJ&D).

We had the privilege of welcoming our new and enthusiastic Youth Directors, Daniella & Dovi Shenkman, to our Shul. Dovi is originally from Teaneck, NJ. Dovi graduated from Yeshiva University and is currently enrolled in Semicha at the school. Daniella is from Cherry Hill, New Jersey. She is a graduate of Stern College for Women and has a master’s degree from Fordham University in Early Childhood Special Education. They are working very hard to prepare new and exciting programs for our youth and we are looking forward to a fabulous year.

As our camping season came to an end, our teachers were in preparing and working hard to get the school ready for our new group of nursery schoolers. We are now in the midst of our first full week of school. As you walk through the halls of our Shul you hear the children learning, playing, laughing and singing. The children are all working very hard with their teachers to prepare and learn everything they need to know for the holidays. We are all looking forward to a great, educational and successful year for the children!

Our Sisterhood is working hard on their Rosh Hashana Greeting and Flower Project and we are sure it will be a huge success just like every other year! Make your Yom Tov - or any day - that much sweeter with a delicious Candy Wheel by Capalbo's Gift Baskets! Price is just $18, Sisterhood gets 20% of all proceeds and delivery within West Orange is FREE!

Together on Tuesday, is off and running for the year. Seniors Coordinator Debbie Druce is hard at work preparing for the new and exciting programs and events. During the year the program meets every Tuesday. The programs are social, intellectual and educational.  Knowledgeable speakers on Judaism, current events, politics and the arts are invited.  One needn't be a member of the congregation in order to participate.  For more information about our summer schedule of any other information, contact Debbie at 973-736-1407 x240 or email her at, srstot@gmail.com.

Last Sat. night, Sept. 8, we had Shelikot (phoentic spelling), where we read prayers of penitence and read/recite/pray the 27th Psalm. My Q: I've read about fasting bet Set. 8 prior to Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Is it a daytime fast? No water? I know NOT to fast dur. RH and 24 hrs bef. Yom Kippur. Thanks!
