What a Week in West Orange

A new council convenes, a circus comes to town, and a fire breaks out on Lincoln Avenue.

This was a week in West Orange that was 150 years in the making. 

After months of anticipation, the township celebrated its 150th anniversary with a bash all week. In the midst of all that, a new council convened for the first time on Sunday, July 1. 

And while school may be out, this week included Superintendent Anthony Cavanna finally choosing a new principal for the West Orange High School for the upcoming school year. 

The week in news concluded with a residential fire at 42 Lincoln Ave. on Thursday that burned and blackened the outside of the home. There was one firefighter who was injured and received medical treatment for smoke inhalation.

The 2012/13 council assembled for the first time on Sunday since the May election. 

Joe Krakoviak and Patricia Spango maintained their positions on the council, while .

The West Orange School District issued a press release on Monday stating that Hayden Moore, 41, is expected to be the next principal of the West Orange High School. Moore is currently an assistant principal. 

Superintendent Anthony Cavanna will make the recommendation to the Board of Education at its July 23 meeting. 

A time capsule was packed full of items from the township on Tuesday, including budgets, a school yearbook, photos and a light bulb, to be sealed until the town's bicentennial in 2062. You can read the full list of things included in the time capsule by clicking on the link above. 

In addition, the township named its Sesquicentennial Baby: Annabelle Gibson, who was born on June 7 at 11:30 a.m.

A one-story house erupted in flames on Lincoln Avenue and injured one firefighter on Thursday. The residents however all escaped safely.
