Teach an adult to read
The single greatest indicator of a child's academic success is the education of his or her parents. Yet many children have less of a chance for success right from the start. Why? Their parents can't read. Or write. In Essex County, 28-percent of all adults are in this group: They can't read to their children, help with homework, or write a note to a child's teacher. At Literacy Volunteers of America, we teach basic literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to adults. So why not share your gift of literacy? Help an adult learn to read and write. Free 16-hour training to become a Literacy Volunteers of America tutor. West Orange Public Library, Wednesdays and Fridays 1-4 pm on April 16, 23, 25, 30, May 7 and 9, 2014. Must attend all sessions.
