Auditions: Importance of Being Earnest

interACT Theatre Productions will hold auditions for the "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde. Auditions for the three-act comedy will be 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29 and Wednesday, October 30 at the Baird Theatre, 5 Mead St., South Orange.

Actors can audition either night. Register on the interACT website by clicking here. All auditions will be a cold reading only.

Performance dates are January 17-January 19 and January 24-January 26 at the Baird. Christine Gaden will direct.

This Oscar Wilde classic follows the story of two young men who create exciting alter-egos to escape their unwanted social obligations in London of 1895, pursuing their love interests with impunity until their falsehoods finally come to light.

interACT is looking for actors to portray the following characters:

  • John (Jack/Ernest) Worthing (late 20s to early 30s): The play’s protagonist. Jack is the guardian of Cecily Cardew and is in love with his friend Algernon’s cousin, Gwendolen Fairfax.
  • Algernon Moncrieff (mid 20s to early 30s): The play’s secondary hero. Algernon is the nephew of Lady Bracknell, cousin of Gwendolen Fairfax, and best friend of Jack Worthing, whom he has known for years as Ernest.
  • Gwendolen Fairfax (mid to late 20s): Algernon’s cousin and Lady Bracknell’s daughter. Gwendolen is in love with Jack, whom she knows as Ernest.
  • Cecily Cardew (late teens): Jack’s ward, the granddaughter of the old gentlemen who found and adopted Jack when Jack was a baby.
  • Lady Bracknell (50s to early 60s): Algernon’s aunt and Gwendolen’s mother.
  • Miss Prism (late 40s to late 50s): Cecily’s governess. She entertains romantic feelings for Dr. Chasuble.
  • Rev. Canon Chasuble (late 40s to late 50s): The rector on Jack’s estate. Dr. Chasuble entertains secret romantic feelings for Miss Prism.
  • Lane (30s to 60s): Algernon’s manservant.
  • Merriman (30s to 60s): The butler at the Manor House, Jack’s estate in the country.
