Hike Washington Rock the Steep Way

South Mountain Reservation, 112 Glenview Rd, South Orange, NJ | Get Directions »
FREE

We will walk mostly on old woods roads that take steep switchbacks up to Washington Rock.  This is the steepest trail in South Mt. Reservation.  An aerobic workout taken at a moderate pace, this is another way of getting to the most popular destination in the park. After the Rock, there is little elevation gain.

Meet at Locust Grove, up a short driveway opposite the Millburn RR station and First Aid Squad on Glen Ave.

No need to register; just come to the meeting point a little before the starting time. Steady rain automatically cancels a walk, intermittent showers do not.

Leader: Dave Hogenauer 973-762-1475 (on day of hike: (973-901-0824).

South Mountain Reservation is run by the Essex County government and is located in Maplewood, Millburn and West Orange. Residents from the entire area take advantage of the trails and waterways in the park and there is also Turtleback Zoo, which is located in the West Orange section of the park. Picnic areas dot the park and there are horseback riding trails. Additionally, there's a dog park with sections for large and small dogs.

One of the main access points to the park in Millburn is at the intersection of Glen Avenue and Lackawanna Place, with limited parking available inside the park. There are also access points along Brookside Drive, although no parking lots are available. Maplewood residents can access the park via South Orange and Sagamore Road.

The South Mountain Conservancy provides information and maps for the park. Additionally, it leads trail walks and hosts clean-ups and trail improvement projects.
