So why not combine west orange, east orange, and orange? Why Livingston and Essex fells and roseland and the caldwells? I could see a 911 dispatch for the entire county. What would that save though? You don't need less people do you? Would volume drop? So you will cut some police chiefs, but what other savings are there? I'm not saying those savings aren't worth it, just pointing out you aren't …   more ›

5 Cars: Muscle Cars for the Car Enthusiast

There's nothing like the open road, a powerful car and a beautiful Spring day.

This week's 5 Cars suggests grabbing a muscle car. What's that? According to Merriam-Webster, it's one of "a group of American-made two-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving." We're talking a huge, honkin' V6 or V8 engine, rear-wheel drive, something you'd imagine Fonzie driving in a drag race. Best of all, a muscle car can make its driver look like she or he shouldn't be messed with: These powerful, though fairly inexpensive, vehicles can make you look and feel tougher, stronger, sexier and richer than you probably are. You know, three grand makes for a tidy down payment... And after dealing with the IRS, feeling tough while being thrifty may be exactly what the doctor ordered. 1. 2014 Ford Mustang…

Cablevision sells 41 venues to Ridgefield, Conn. chain.

Bow Tie Cinemas of Ridgefield, Conn. announced it has purchased 41 Clearview Cinema theaters from Cablevision, a published report said Monday. With the acquisition, which will make Bow Tie the nation’s number 8 exhibition company, Bow Tie vows to pay for “key upgrades that are designed to enhance the movie-going experience,” including digital and 3D projection, according to a report on the website Deadline.com. Clearview currently has 26 theaters in New Jersey, the report said. Cablevision bought the venues in 1998 and put the chain up for sale last year. Welp, I took advantage of the discounted tickets and definitely the free Tuesday night movies during the summer months. I really can't see paying full price for a movie now especially since I haven't seen a good movie since Forest Gump. Time to do some shopping.   more ›

'The Place Beyond the Pines:' A Promising Plot Spoils, Loses Focus

Not even Ryan Gosling's charm and good looks can save this film. Now playing nearby.

This column was written by Lori Wieczorek, editor-in-chief of Montclair State University's newspaper The Montclarion. "The Place Beyond the Pines" is now playing nearby. "The Place Beyond the Pines" markets itself as a Ryan Gosling flick — which comes with the obvious expectations — but not even his good looks can save this movie from losing focus.  The film opens with Gosling playing the role of Luke and a glimpse into his life as a motorcycle stunt driver. His rough, tattooed appearance is curbed by his boyish good looks and affability. Within minutes, the viewer finds out that Luke has a past with Romina (played by Eva Mendes). The interaction is charged with sexual attraction but we have yet to find out the extent of their relationship…
