Jerseylicious Just Got Bigger

Anthony Robert Salon opens in spacious, new Verona venue.

Things are still relatively quiet at 279 Bloomfield Ave. in Verona, the new home of Jerseylicious reality star Anthony Lombardi’s salon, but that’s just because they’re settling in. This week is the salon’s soft opening, but Lombardi is planning a grand opening for next month. The sleek new space was a big undertaking for Lombardi, who has just about quadrupled his size from the tiny, four-chair salon he first opened in Verona six years ago. And, as with all construction projects, this one wasn’t quite completed by the time Lombardi had hoped. He planned on opening in April. When asked to describe how the transition went, the ever-energetic and optimistic Lombardi said, “So far so good.” But he admitted he’s still “trying to figure out …

Village Diner Joins Forces with SHU to Support Haiti Effort

Eat at Village Diner from May 6-12 to support the effort

Village Diner in South Orange will donate ten percent of patrons' bills to build a chicken coop in Haiti. Seton Hall's Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE) supports the 250 orphans living at Maison Fortune in Haiti. The group sends volunteers twice a year. Now they want to build a chicken coop for the orphanage. The coop and 1000 chickens will cost $15000 and will supplement the children's current diet of spaghetti and ketchup. The coop will be built in honor of Djoceus, a young resident of the orphanage who recently drowned. Direct Wine Shipping Hits New Jersey: Locals React

But how will local wine stores fare?

On May 1, it became legal for wineries of a certain size to direct ship wine to New Jersey costumers. It's great news for New Jersey wine growers, but perhaps not so great for local wine shops. The fear of opponents to the new law — signed by Gov. Christie on January 17 — is that direct shipping will erode sales of wine in local retail shops around the state, potentially hurting local business and costing local jobs. A major opponent of the bill that allowed direct shipping was Assemblyman John Cryan (D-Union), whose family owns Cryan's tavern in South Orange. In an Op-Ed piece on newjerseynewsroom.com, Cryan explained that he supported an alternative bill that he felt would not threaten local shops: I sponsored the Assembly bill that …

Que Viva Cinco de Mayo!

Grab your sombrero and prepare to fiesta for the holiday, this Saturday, May 5.

Cue the mariachi band music, put on that sombrero, and grab yourself a handful of tortilla chips - Cinco de Mayo is here. This Saturday marks the celebration of Cinco de Mayo- which translates to “5th of May” - a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, observed in parts of Mexico and the United States. Often mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo is actually a commemoration of the Battle of Puebla, a hard-won victory by the outnumbered Mexican militia over French forces in 1862, according to History.com. But here in New Jersey - Cinco de Mayo is a good excuse for some music, dancing and food.  Bars and restaurants throughout our area will be joining in the fun, with live bands, food and drink specials, and parties.  Read…

Rock-it Pizza Under New Management

An old chef returns to run the pizzeria.

Mark La Mond returned to Rock-it Pizzeria, 560 Valley Road in West Orange, as chef and new owner of the pizzeria on Thursday. "Mark is just going to add his own touch while keeping it the same," the manager Liz Puglio said.  The pizzeria also will expand to next door, opening a sit-down, dine-in area with BYOB for about 25 people in June, when the landlord finishes the remodeling of the building.  La Mond has redone the menu for catering, dine-in and take-out  "We're going to wow the city of West Orange," Puglio said.

I was there tonight and can say that Rock-it Pizza finally has a real menu now that new management has taken over. Not only did Rock-it Pizza get rid of the old menu that was a piece of white paper copied off a computer with 15 items on it, the new menu is professionally printed and has everything on the menu that a pizzeria restaurant should have. Rock-it Pizza always had good food, they just …   more ›
