West Orange Bank Robbed at Gunpoint

TD Bank was robbed this afternoon of an undisclosed amount of cash.

West Orange police are searching for a man who entered the TD Bank at Pleasant Valley Way Monday, brandishing a handgun and demanded cash from a teller before fleeing with an undetermined amount of money.

According to West Orange police Sgt. John Palardy, the man, described as white, with glasses and wearing a dark baseball cap facing backwards, approached a bank teller at approximately 1:15 p.m. The man showed the teller a silver semi-automatic handgun, Palardy said.

West Orange High School was placed on a modified lockdown from 1:30-2 p.m. because of the incident, due to the school's proximity to the bank.

Officials said when the man fled the bank, they were unsure whether he escaped by foot or by a car.

West Orange police are reviewing surveillance video of the incident and said the investigation is ongoing.

A TD Bank representative who identified herself as Margie declined to comment on the robbery.

West Orange Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

It is terrible that the crime rate in West Orange continues to sky rocket and the mayor continues to compromise the safety of the citizens by not properly staffing the police department.

Oh, please. It's a BANK ROBBERY, not street crime. It's reasonable to argue that muggings and the like can be addressed with additional patrols, task forces, etc.; crimes like bank robberies are going to take place everywhere there are banks, and if the robbers have any sense, are MORE likely to happen in suburbs than cities -- response times should be longer and a quick getaway onto a highway should be easy.

wohopeful I think there is considerable merit in what you say. Police Director Parisi and Chief Abbott contend that while the total number of officers is down, the available officers are being used more effectively. They say that officers who were behind desks have been reassigned to street duty. Question ; What were these officers doing at their desks? Nothing? Or nothing of any consequence? Or maybe they were doing important police work, and this is a case of borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. Question: The West Orange girl's soccer coach is a West Orange police detective. How does he coach every day after school and still do the shift work that the Police Department requires? I have read many ,many times about police officers being granted waivers so they can coach or teach. Has the WOPD exempted him from afternoon and evening shifts { including weekends } so he can coach? I think they must have. That's more effective utilization of manpower? As Will Rogers said," I only know what I read in the papers ." Regarding the armed robberies and murders in town, how many of these people has the West Orange Police Department apprehended? West Orange has { approximately} 1 officer for every 500 citizens, and the Township is slightly larger than 12 square miles in area.

SKY ROCKET! Please, get a grip on yourself. You sound like an alarmist, as if the town is running a free amusement park for criminals. Fortunately we don't live in a gated community.

What is going on in town? Has the safe nature of this suburban town changed or has this been going on for some time?

Usually when I hear about a bank robbery it is in a "safe suburban town". My friend was a bank teller in a town of less than 5,000 people and his bank got robbed. This is nothing unique to West Orange, does not indicate any kind of trend, nor is it anything for people to be concerned about.

It doesn't seem strange to anyone that a bomb threat was called in to the school and JCC at the same time and a short time after that a bank was robbed - the teller was held at gunpoint up on Pleasant Valley Way? It seems obvious to me that they called in the threats to distract the police so they could pull off the robbery. Maybe I just watch too many of those police shows, but it seems like it would be connected.

Agreed. The timing is suspect.

The bomb threats were at around 9:45 am, and the buildings had been clear and everyone let back in well before the bank robbery, which was after 1 pm. The diversion would have been a good plan, but absolutely doesn't seem to have been the case.

Tom G I hope the people who have been robbed at gunpoint and their families and their customers and the people in the locked - down schools and their families and the people who live in the directly affected neighborhoods agree with your statement that "it's nothing to be concerned about."

@ john - I think you missed my point. I don't wake up every morning in a state of paranoia worrying that I might walk into a bank robbery or that a bomb might go off. After reading about these 2 incidents I am no more "on alert" than I was before as I don't see these incidents as being indicative of any type of trend occurring in town.
