West Orange Announces Change in School Calendar

District will be open Valentine's Day to make up for days lost in Sandy.

The West Orange Board of Education recently voted to add days to the school calendar to make up for closures resulting from Hurricane Sandy.

District officials said Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013 will now be a full day, and Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 will be a single session or half day, the district announced.

The super storm closed West Orange schools for one week at the end of October and beginning of November, leaving it one day short of the state-mandated 180 days of school for students.

The full revised calendar is attached as a PDF to this article.

So the contingency laid out on the calendar - after 3 missed days start taking days from spring break, beginning with Friday - is for naught? Why print t on the calendar, then?

Half days are not half days- students by law need 4 hours to be considered a day in school. I agree with leaving April break in tact however.
