Maple Street Fire Investigated for Arson
Sunday morning fire on Maple Street deemed 'suspicious'
The fire that broke out early Sunday morning at a home on Maple Street in West Orange is being investigated as a possible arson, officials with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.
The two-alarm blaze began on the front porch of a two-story house shortly before 5 a.m., Fire Chief Peter Smeraldo said. He said the flames extended to the front doorway but did not breach the inside of the home.
The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes and caused no injuries, Smeraldo said. The house remains inhabitable and only suffered minor smoke damages inside the residence.
Both occupants of the home were safely evacuated, officials said.
The home owner told police she was asleep when she heard a noise in the front of her house and smelled smoke., according to the police report.
Another woman told police she was asleep in the second floor bedroom and heard a "loud bang" that sounded like the front screen door slamming.
The deputy fire chief on scene deemed the fire suspicious and called arson investigators, police said. Authorities did not release details on the cause of the blaze or why the fire was thought to be suspicious.
According to the police report, when asked by police, the homeowner said a woman she was currently involved with in an unrelated family court matter may be responsible for the blaze. Police say they are investigating the matter.
