Top 10 Sports Moments of the Year

See which players and teams made the list

Track and Field along with wrestling were the top two sports in West Orange over the past 12 months. So it stands to reason that they will appear on this list multiple times. However, the Mountaineer football team had a tremendous season as did the girls soccer team.

Here is a list of the top 10 sports moments of the year for West Orange High School.

1. Jun. 9 - Nia Barnes is best javelin thrower in the state: While she was considered the best all season long and it was assumed that she would continue to prove it week in and week out, culminating with a Meet of Champions title, it's one thing to be favored, it's another to actually do it. Barnes destroyed the competition at the MOC last spring, tossing 154 feet and 11 inches, more than 15 feet farther than the closest competition.

2. Feb. 26 - Emiliano Betancor wins Region 4 again: This year Betancor's victim was Tom Trommelen of Clifton, who was pinned in the second round of the Region 4 heavyweight championships. Betancor advanced to Atlantic City for the state championships.

3. Jun. 4 - Dexter Valley edges Leonard Lockhart for Group 4 title: Valley claimed the Group 4 championship in the 400 meter dash, clocking in ahead of Lockhart by .04 seconds. On that same day, Valley's teammate, Jared Mason, placed second in the 800. They were both North I Group 4 winners a week earlier in the 100 and 400 for Valley, and the 800 for Mason.

4. Feb. 9 - Mountaineer wrestlers just get by Morris Knolls in state semis: West Orange was trailing 27-21 with three bouts left to be wrestled. At 125, Dawitt Rutty got a technical fall over Tom Shauger and Desalegne Fried, at 130, earned a first round pin over Tyler Chicarella to give West Orange a 32-27 lead, which they were able to hold onto and win 32-31.

5. Dec. 29 - Two county champs for West Orange wrestling: George Christian (215) and Betancor both claimed county championships at Richard J. Codey Arena. The Mountaineers placed third overall in the tournament.
6. 5/28: 4x400 team wins the section: The quartet of Karl Cajuste, Afernee LaRue, James Cham and Valley clocked in at 3:21.58 and won the 4x400 North I Group 4 state sectional crown. West Orange placed third in the section as a team overall.

7. May 20: West Orange girls track represents in county: Nia Barnes set a new county record with her javelin toss of 148 feet. Aliyia Barnes placed second in the 100 hurdles, Sydney Grimes and Nia Barnes finished first and second respectively in the shot put, while Crimes and Chinwe Igwe were also first and second in the discus.

8. Nov. 12: From woe and three to the state semis for football: West Orange started the season with an 0-3 record and certainly did not have the look of a playoff team early on. But after dropping that third game, the Mountaineers reeled off seven straight victories, including a first round playoff win over Livingston, 34-9, before meeting the end against Montclair in the semifinals.

9. Jan. 30: Nia Barnes and 4x400 shine in indoor counties: Normally her weapon of choice is the javelin, but Barnes proved she is a natural thrower, winning the shot put title during indoor season at the county championships. Joining her in the winners' circle was the Mountaineer 4x400 team, which also won the county.

10. Nov. 5 - Raven Edwards gets a hat trick to end West Orange career: Simply put, Edwards was an unstoppable scorer this past fall, tallying 35 goals to go along with seven assists. In the final game of her high school career, Edwards flashed her dominance once more and scored all of West Orange's goals in a 3-0 win over Mt. St. Dominic.
